Helene Waltraud Wendland (nee Utecht) 1935 – 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Helene Waltraud Wendland on January 23, 2023 in Victoria BC. Helene was predeceased by her husband Bruno and is survived by her brother Gerhard (Gabi) in Germany and will be greatly missed by her sons Kim (Shirley), Toby (Carol); grandchildren, Justine (Maxim), Joshua, Liberty, Cooper & Huxley.
Born in Berlin Germany in 1935 Helene immigrated to Canada in 1957 after corresponding with a young German man who had already immigrated to Canada. Bruno told Helen what a wonderful place Canada was and she took a chance to come to Canada at 21 years old to meet Bruno. She decided to stay and married Bruno. Helene trained in the hairdressing vocation in Germany and worked in her chosen profession for 48 years, a job she loved with many clients who came to her for decades.
Helene was a long-time member of the Victoria Edelweiss Club and enjoyed speaking German at the club and attending Octoberfest and New Years Eve dances. She enjoyed traveling to many places including Hawaii, Cuba, Mexico, Italy, Croatia, France, Czechoslovakia, and Germany.
Special thanks to the staff at Selkirk Seniors Village for caring for our mother.
At her request there will be no service.
