It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Helen Marion Shaw after a courageous battle with cancer at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit on May 30, 2023.
Helen Marion Shaw (McMahon) beloved wife of Howard F. Shaw (d 1989), devoted mother to Wayne (Shirley Aldred), Howie (Maureen Cleary), Connie (Bruce Brown), Cheryl Shaw Jones, Cathy (Pat Allen) all of Peterborough and Julie Shaw of Ohio, NS.
Loving grandmother to Stephen Shaw (Melissa McNally), Melissa Shaw (Dan Hill), Brittney Shaw (Kevin Conlin), Morgan Shaw (Logan Massimo), Ian Brown (Jennifer Carreira), Eric Brown (Myriam Veillet-Lemay), Allyson Brown (Vittorio Delavedova), Shawna Jones (Bryan Goode), Jim Allen (Angela Dumas), and Sway Allen (Paul Benoit).
Proud great grandmother of Georgia Shaw, Noah and Olivia Hill, Blair Conlin, Elora Allen, Anna Brown, and Hannah, Andrew, Matthew, and Claire Goode.
Predeceased by her parents John J. McMahon and Mary Ann McMurray. Helen is the last of their 13 children, predeceased by siblings David (Eva Heffernan), John James, Mildred (William Milne), Frank (Charlotte Scott), Margaret (Ed Gooley), Leo, Lillian (Maitland Murdock), Tom (Alice Beaudoin), Dennis (Madeline Reynolds), Richard (Lorraine Quinn), John Henry (Patricia McLaren), and Robert.
She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family was most important to her, and she showed her love and devotion with her wonderful cooking, baking, and preserving. Her recipes have been passed on to her children and grandchildren and will continue to be passed along and used by future generations.
Helen enjoyed travelling with friends and camping trips with her family. She was also an avid bowler. She bowled with the Lucky Strike Bowling League from the 1950’s until she was 91 years old. She also enjoyed playing bid euchre at Grace United Church for many years. As well she was an artist, and her paintings will be cherished by family.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of her life will be held. Interment at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Peterborough.
The family extends its gratitude and appreciation to the doctors, particularly Dr. Becca Webster and Dr. Erin Nishikawa, nurses, and staff of PHRC palliative care unit for their compassionate and professional care during Mom’s stay with them. Donations to PRHC Palliative Care Unit would be greatly appreciated in Mom’s memory.
