J. Helen Ellis
The family of Jessie Helen Ellis announce her peaceful passing on January 8, 2023 at the Veterans’ Health Centre in Moncton.
Helen was born in Stanley, N.B., the eldest daughter of Herbert and Margaret (Douglas) Sansom on March 30, 1923. She is pre-deceased by her first husband, Albert W.F. Snow; second husband, Wilmot F Ellis; step daughter Bonnie Ellis; brothers Angus D Sansom, and Jimmy Sansom.
Helen graduated from Provincial Normal School (later to be Teachers’ College) in Fredericton, N.B. She taught school in N.B. and Quebec before joining the R.C.A.F (W.D.) in World War II. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, firstly Sus and later Moncton Branch #6. In recent years she resided at Peoples Park Tower in Moncton and then at the Veterans Health Centre.
Helen was an active member of Mount Royal United Church and a Life Member of the United Church Women as well as being a Life Member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Past Matron of the Order affiliated with Frank Tingley #5; a former Grand Chapter Officer and a past Grand Chapter Representative to Ohio and Maryland. Helen loved to travel and enjoyed many wonderful trips in Canada and overseas with family members and friends. She loved sending (and getting) cards and letters, playing bridge, and baking for family and friends, especially at Christmas.
After moving from Montreal in 1950 to N.B., Helen and Albert owned and operated a craft shop and the Snow Shoe cabins in Fox Hill, N.B. Later they designed and built the Timberland Motel near Sus. After Albert’s passing, Helen continued to operate the motel, alone and later with Wilmot Ellis, her second husband, pre-deceased.
Helen is survived by sisters Mary Davis (Fredericton) and Elizabeth Quirk (Calgary); son, Christopher (Paulette) Snow of Quispamsis, N.B.; daughters Susan (Gerald) Linfield of Tatamagouche, N.S.; and Wendy (Guy) White of Halifax, N.S.; grand-daughters Lisa Snow, and Laura (Andrew) Purje; grandsons Anthony (Nicola) Snow; Andrew, Michael (Morgan Hiltz), and Peter Linfield (Meghan Patterson); Vincent Smith (Reegan Gouchie-Smart); step grandson Alexander (Jenna) Nott; as well as by several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd (858-1995) on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Order of the Eastern Star memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 pm followed by Legion Branch#6 tribute service at 1:45pm. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, January 12th at 10:30 am with Rev. Scott Stuart leading the service, reception to follow. Service will be live streamed on the Fergusons Funeral Home website. Interment will be at Kirkhill Cemetery in Sus, N.B.
In lieu of flowers, remembrance may be made to Mount Royal United Church or charity of the donor’s choice with appreciation from the family.
