December 12, 1919 – January 15, 2023
At Christie Gardens, Toronto, suddenly and unexpectedly, just one year after the death of his beloved wife of 70 years, Dr. M. Daria Haust. Heinz leaves behind his sons, Bill (Judy) and Jan (Millie); grandsons Andrew, Lee (Deborah), Marco and Julius; and great grandchildren Evers, Quinn and Mabel. Even though he was 103, we felt our adored Vati/Opa would surely live forever. Despite significant sight and hearing impairments, his mind remained brilliant and his wit sharp. Although regularly grieving the loss of Daria over the past year, he never lost his zest for life as was evident by his on-going intellectual curiosity, passion for Baroque music (especially Bach), flair for foreign languages (taking a special delight in comparing idioms and proverbs in German, French, English, Spanish, and Italian), heart-warming smile, and the twinkle in his eye. Born in Hanau, Germany, Heinz was only 19 when WW2 was declared. A second medical lieutenant in the Germany army, he was wounded while retreating from the Soviet army after the fall of Stalingrad. While a US Prisoner of War in France, he was frequently called upon to interpret for the Americans. In 1952, Heinz and Daria, having met as medical students in Heidelberg, Germany, moved to Canada, settling in Kingston where their two sons were born. At Queen’s University, Heinz acquired a PhD in Biochemistry, and subsequently was a Visiting Scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. In 1967, the family relocated to London, ON, where Heinz was medical director of research at Children’s Psychiatric Research Institute (CPRI) and taught at The University of Western Ontario. His professional focus was the treatment and containment of lead poisoning. Moving to Christie Gardens with Daria in 2010 to be closer to family, Heinz transferred to the Courtyard (LTC) section in late 2020, where he received heartfelt TLC every day from his wonderful care team led by Dr. Peter Kopplin, Allison Cooper (Annex Advocate), and Rev. John Duyck. Over the years, he delighted in a weekly Men’s Discussion Group, French Club, and slipping into the darkened auditorium late at night to practise piano. Cremation has taken place, and our parents’ remains will rest in the family plot in Marburg, Germany. Should you wish to make a donation in memory of Heinz, please consider The Christie Gardens Foundation, or a charity of your choice. We leave you with one of Vati’s favourite proverbs: Il mattiniero ottiene il verme ma il secondo topo ottiene il formaggio.
