1929-2022
Spinney,
Harlan Carlson – 93, lifelong resident of Black River,
recently residing in Grand View Manor, Berwick, passed away peacefully
in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Friday, December 30, 2022
with family by his side. Born in Black River, he was a son of the late
Emery and Betsy (Schofield) Spinney.
Harlan
enjoyed farming and working in the woods. He was a dedicated worker,
starting at 14, hauling logs. At 16, he was employed with Sonny
Millett, driving a dump truck hauling gypsum. In 1959, he joined
Maurice’s Ready Mix in New Minas as a concrete truck driver
until his retirement in 1994. He was awarded with 1,000,000 miles of
safe driving at that time. He always looked forward to the Seniors
Socials in the Black River Hall on Wednesday afternoons, where he
would play 45’s with his family and friends. His favourite
pastime was his regular junk run on Friday’s, throughout the
Valley, gathering up scrap metal.
In
addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Maxine (Acker)
in 2009; sisters, Florence, Renna, Vilda, Anne and Sandra; and
brothers, Gerald, Franzell, Leo, Frank and
Eldon.
He is
survived by his brother, Blake (Clara), Black River; daughters, Diane
(Bryce) Ells, Black River and Cindy (Daniel Wellwood), New Minas;
sons, Arnold (Cheryl), Coldbrook and Troy (Debi), Canaan;
grandchildren, Lynn, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Evan and Leslie;
step-grandchildren, Shane, Anthony and Stephanie; great-grandchildren,
Ryken, Kaidyn, Logan, Curtis, Emma and Levi; and
step-great-grandchildren, Ryker, Claire, Deborah, Brent, Ann-Marie and
Evan.
The
family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff and
volunteers at Grand View Manor for the excellent care they provided to
Harlan.
In
keeping with Harlan’s wishes there will be no visitation or
funeral service. A private family interment will take place in Black
River Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to Grand View Manor.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted
to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
