Gwen Wilmot
March 15, 1924 to June 26, 2023
Gwendolen (Gwen) Wilmot left us to join her parents Arthur and Evelyn Wood, and her beloved husband of over 54 years, Bob (Robert D.) on Monday, June 26, 2023.
Gwen was a devoted mother to Margaret (Michael), Douglas (Christina) and Jean (Dave). Grandmother to Maureen (Jonathan) and Sean O’Connell and Martin (Stephanie) Cottreau and Great grandmother to Caleb and Edith Musser and Kai, Opal and Lily Cottreau.
Gwen was an only child to her parents who had both immigrated to Canada from England after the 1st world war. She lived in Regina as a child but the family relocated to Ottawa during the depression and built a life here. In 1936, Gwen had the experience of a lifetime when she travelled to France with her parents (her father had fought at Passchendaele) to attend the dedication of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial by King Edward the VIII.
Gwen was a mathematics superstar in high school and was recruited directly out of school by the Annuities Branch to do actuarial calculations. A job she loved but had to give up when she married Bob in 1951.
Gwen was an avid tennis player, starting at age 5 in Regina, with the enthusiastic help of her father Arthur, a founding member of the Raemac Tennis Courts at the Larrimac Club in Chelsea. Gwen played her last round in her 89th year. Gwen was made a life member of the Club for her many years working with the junior tennis program. A strong believer in active living, she also enjoyed skiing in the Gatineau Hills, Curling at the Navy, and Hiking.
After Bob’s retirement, the couple enjoyed many cruises and tours to Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. They also enjoyed spending November and April with many friends in Clearwater and later at Lehigh Florida.
Her family often joked that it was hard to find time to spend with their mother as her calendar was always full with her Bridge group, Engineers’ Wives and her many long-standing commitments to the community through pastoral care and her circle at St. Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church.
Busy as she was, she always gave others her full attention and showed tremendous interest in their accomplishments. She demonstrated this by clipping articles from newspapers and magazines on subjects she knew you were interested in. These gestures were always accompanied by a little note written in her impeccable (award winning) penmanship. She remembered everyone with a card or note on their birthday and at Christmas and was rewarded by many remembering her with a card or letter in return.
As was her wish, there will be no visitation at this time. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2345 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa on Friday, Sept. 8th 2023 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, the Primates World Relief Fund, the Ottawa Mission or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
