Obituary For Gurth Lloyd Moon
Gurth Lloyd Moon, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 24, 2023, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 70 years.
Gurth was born October 13, 1952, in Grande Prairie. His early years were spent in the Bezanson, AB, area. In Grade 3 he moved with his family to Grande Prairie. It was at this time he met his long-time friend, Wayne Dunbar.
While Gurth was in junior high school, he became the proud owner of a small street motorcycle – a Yamaha 80. Wayne also had a motorcycle, and he introduced Gurth to two other motorcycle owners, Alan Munro, and Brian Hanson. Together the four of them spent many a good time cruising the streets of Grande Prairie. As had happened with Wayne, Gurth developed lifelong friendships with Alan and Brian. He also took up drumming. He drummed for the Scarlet Creamsicle, and the Peace of Mind, local rock and roll bands, of which Brian and other friends were also members. Gurth was known for his rock-solid drumming.
After high school, he worked with his dad at Tissington Industries at the airport. When his dad, Gordon Moon, and Richard Moon started Prism Glass & Paint, Gurth worked there with them. He became a Journeyman Glazier, receiving top honors in his class. He was a meticulous, conscientious hard worker. Eventually, Gurth and Brian ended up owning Prism and operated it successfully for many years. Former employees speak of the camaraderie and fun times that were had at Prism. Many of these former employees remained friends with Gurth throughout the years. In due course, the business was sold and Gurth and Brian continued with other investments. Gurth did, however, keep working at Prism until he suffered a bout with meningitis, after which he retired. During retirement, Gurth spent time maintaining his house – the outside of which he painted every year! He was always ready and willing to help his friends.
Gurth enjoyed many trips with his friends, including visits to Haida Gwaii, other areas of British Columbia, eastern Canada, and the United States. Gurth was also an avid car buff, owning a rare Buick Regal.
Gurth was a very private individual, and he did not want to ever impose on anyone, even when he was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. That little guy Gurth was loved by his family and his friends.
Gurth will be dearly missed by his relatives: niece Tammy Figol (Don); great-nephew Sawyer Figol; nephew Shane Higginson (Victoria); as well as many good friends.
Gurth was predeceased by his parents Bill and Ida Moon; his brother Deryle Moon; his sister Cheryl Higginson; as well as brother in-law Stan Higginson.
The family and friends of Gurth wish to thank Dr. Pope, Dr. Martin, Dr. Barreth, and all the nurses who cared so compassionately for Gurth.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023, at 11:00 am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta (102, 9823 116 Ave Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 4B4, alzheimer.ca/en/ab), or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (710 10123 99 St. NW Edmonton, AB, T5J 3H1, www.albertacancer.ca).
