Obituary
Gordon was born August 16, 1926 in Morrin, Alberta, to parents Andrew and Sophie Aune and he passed away at the Fairview Hospital April 10, 2023 at the age of 96.5 years. He was born the last of 11 children. His family moved from Morrin to their Deer Hill farm Northeast of Fairview, Alberta, in 1933. Gordon attended the Deer Hill School north in that area with the local school children. As time went on, Gordon soon became a farmer with his own land & equipment as well.
Gordon married Julieta Alejandrino on June 12th 2014 in Peace River. Gordon and Julieta made their home on the same family farm until moving to Fairview.
Gordon is survived by his wife Julieta, one sister-in-law Violet Aune (Albert), and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and extended family.
He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Sophie Aune; his 4 sisters, Ruth Dodd (Earl), Lillian Dodd (Everet), Thora Davis (Bill), Doris Coon (Wilson) and 6 brothers, Gerhardt, Arthur (Clare), Albert, Sigwardt, Henry, Clarence.
As a child, Yvette says her Gramma Aune (Sophie) told her that Gordon helped his mother make cheese (big round wheels of cheese). The Aune family sold the cheese they made from the milking of their cows to the neighbours and Gordon helped to get the cheese wrapped and ready for sale, which “like Dwayne says” was most likely the only place for them to get a little spending money in those early days. Yvette was always intrigued by the shine of Uncle Gordon’s stainless steel kitchen sink on the farm (you could almost use it as a mirror it was so spotlessly shiny).
Home chores on the farm included getting in and splitting the wood for the wood stove, milking the cows, haymaking, seeding and general harvest on the farm. The procession of farm silage cow feed equipment in the fall was a sight to behold as the Aune brothers pooled their machinery together and helped one another put up the winter feed for their herds.
Gordon was a quiet fellow, a man of few words. He became a welder on the farm, and was often seen helping neighbours with their weld jobs. Dwayne says “Probably Henry taught him”. His weld jobs included when he put together the backends of two Ferguson Major Diesel tractors together to become one tractor, which was quite a pleasure to see while he farmed his land (probably the first 4wheel drive tractor north of Edmonton).
The Aune boys (as they were called) spent many hours bowling in Fairview, as well as various games of pool, cards, darts at the Whitelaw drop-in center. They also played darts at home many winter evenings. When work came along for the David Thompson Community hall, Gordon could be counted on to help.
They Aune Farm Auction sale in Deer Hill was in 2003. Farmers seem to have lots of tools and equipment as did their farm. Gordon was a true farmer, putting in the long hours of summer sunshine in Northern Alberta and cold hours of winter snowstorms (but the snow was good for the horse & sleigh he would say).
The only time Gordon left Canada (before he met Julieta) was when he went for the old D7 caterpillar to Seattle to a caterpillar warehouse and picked up the final drive for it. The Highboy story of its unload was…an adventure on the farm, because when the front end of the High Boy was dropped, the caterpillar made a firm crawl on its own right into the truck tractor, and stopped with a heck of a bang. Someone hadn’t set the brakes, or it had no brakes, not sure.
Gordon wired the Aune log house for electricity. They got the electric power (“maybe in the mid 50s” Dwayne says); they had the light plant before that. He was always interested in the newest technology which was enthusiastically demonstrated by getting his new desktop computer at 80 years old. Gordon installed the squared Tiles in the living room and dining room of the old squared log house, which was quite a chore because the tiles were square but the wall positions might not have been quite as square.
Julieta helped Gordon become quite the traveler. Julieta and Gordon went twice to the Phillipines. Many thought he wouldn’t make it back, but he sure did, with the great care of Julieta.
Julieta and extended family thank Dr. Bob Irvine, the nurses, all staff, & helpers of the Fairview Health Complex & Long Term Care for their care of Gordon over the years.
A Funeral Service will take place Wednesday April 19th, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Fairview Gospel Chapel.
