Obituary
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Gordon “Binky” F.K. Winchcombe on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023. Gordon was born on August 1st, 1945 to the late Irene and Arthur Winchcombe in Halifax, NS. He married the woman he had been waiting for, Wenda Gillchrist, on April 21st, 1979. Together they raised five children and were there for many more…giving them everything they could.
Gordon worked in lighting sales for his entire life. Starting with General Electric, on to Union Electric, Eddy’s and finally retiring from Munroe, he was well known in the city as knowledgeable in the field. In fact, many customers also came to him for any fixture repair/alteration issues they had.
One this he always loved to do was go out to pick berries. He would pick by hand for hours and bring them home where he and Wenda would clean them and she would bake pies and breads for the family.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife Wenda and his children Wesley Bennett (Andrea), Sheryl Titus (Duane), Aaron Bennett, David Bennett (Kate) and Sarah Sollows (Ethan). Hi grandchildren Adam Titus (Ally), Neil Titus (Leeanne, Gracen Bennett, Hunter Bennett, Lorelai Sollows and Elaina Sollows. Gordon also had 5 great grandchildren Isaac, Ella, Levi, Kane and Noah Titus. He is also survived by a brother Peter and a sister Carold as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Waiting for him to arrive in heaven, are his parents Irene and Arthur, his brother David and his niece Rosemary.
Gordon struggled through his latter years with Diabetes and the family would like to express a special thank you to his granddaughters-in-law Ally and Leeanne Titus. Both nurses by trade, they often helped out with care needs for Gordon and the value of their assistance, both to him and Wenda, can’t be understated. We would also like to recognize Wenda’s sister Joan Gillchrist for all her continual support for Wenda throughout this difficult time. In the past 5 years, it has been difficult for Gordon with his severe health issues and his neighbors and friends have been there to help with anything they could. Ron Day has been invaluable to Wenda and Gordon. He has done everything from snowblowing their driveway to mowing the lawn and patching the roof. Thank you as well to the wonderful staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital and to Dr. Mackin, a very kind and compassionate person. The nursing care and support he received from Extra Mural was exceptional and greatly appreciated, as well as the guidance provided by Gina.
Anyone who knew Gordon, knew he was a private person, and therefore will understand he requested no traditional funeral viewing. Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). A Graveside Service will take place at St. Martin’s Community Cemetery on Thursday, September 28th at 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life reception in the United Baptist Church Hall. Donations can be made to the Diabetes Foundation and to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
