Gloria’s Obituary
FITZGERALD, Gloria Alice – age 84. After a short battle with metastatic cancer, Mom passed away peacefully with her strong, loving family by her side on January 27th, 2023. Born October 24th, 1938 in Londonderry, NS, she was the daughter of the late Elwin and Ethel (Campbell) McLean.
Mom moved to Toronto in her late teens and on a blind date, she met Dad, the love of her life and husband of 61 years. In Toronto, she held positions with Thermos Canada, Sprague as well as being a telephone operator with Bell. She soon grew tired of the hustle and bustle of the city and suggested they move to Dad’s hometown of Wedgeport, NS. So, in 1975, they packed up their belongings along with us four kids and made that journey to the place we all refer to as “home”.
Following their move, Mom and Dad operated a general store and gradually expanded into building supplies. Always open to new opportunities, they embarked on a boatbuilding career where Dad was a founder and operator of Wedgeport Boats Ltd. and Mom made sure the office work got done.
Mom enjoyed traveling around the world with Dad and often talked of her escapades with him. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, watching “The 90 Day Fiancé” as well as the Montreal Canadians. Her real passion was quilting and the floor to ceiling stacks of fabric in her sewing room are proof of that!
Mom was predeceased by Dad, her brothers Lee and Bruce, her parents as well as her in-laws Edward and Antoinette Fitzgerald, who she loved as her own. She is survived by her sisters Pauline LeBlanc, Pickering, ON and Norma Crouse, Coldstream, NS, as well as sister in laws Jeanette Cottreau, Wedgeport, NS and Pauline DeViller, Melbourne, NS. She is also survived by her children Kimberly (Harland) Martell, Wedgeport; Wendy (Mike) Amero, Gilbert’s Cove; Patrick (Kelly) Fitzgerald, Bayswater; Tish (Mark) Muise, Kingston. “Mama” also leaves behind her grandchildren, Ashley, Joshua, Kale, Chennacy (Joey), Kaitlin (Brandon), Mackenzie (Noah), Benjamin, Lauren, Rylee, great granddaughter Olivia Mae Gloria and a baby on the way, as well as step-grandchildren Justin and Jordan.
Family meant everything to Mom. She was her happiest when the entire family would gather for a meal or an afternoon of fun. Many conversations were had over the last few months and most centered around how proud she was of her four children, their spouses and her grandchildren. She had a special relationship with all of us and made sure she was a loving, funny and kind mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She and Dad were the center of the “Fitzgerald” family and the day that she took on that role by herself was the day that she showed us just how strong of a person she really was. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. The family would like to thank the staff of Yarmouth Regional Hospital for her excellent care.
Due to weather the graveside service will now be taking place at Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport, on Friday, February 17, 2023 at 1 p.m. A reception will be held at the Wedgeport Legion following the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gilles Boudreau and Friends Cancer Help Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to H.M.
