Write a Tribute
Glenn passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 10, after a lengthy illness. He was 63 years old. He was a dedicated family man and a well-respected and recognized professional engineer.
Glenn grew up in Belleville, Ontario and dreamt of playing in the NHL. However, with great self awareness he realized the slim odds of achieving this goal and redirected his focus on academics. Despite initially struggling as a student, Glenn exhibited remarkable self-discipline and determination in his senior year of high school, transforming himself into an A student. He went on to graduate from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Mech. Eng. in 1983.
Following graduation, Glenn ventured westward to Vancouver, where he established his career as a Fire Protection Engineer and Building Code Consultant. He partnered with colleagues to start a code consulting firm. His hard work, dedication and integrity helped make his company a success and he was instrumental in many advancements to building codes and the Certified Professional Program used by many code professionals today.
Glenn and his wife, Carol, made their home in North Vancouver where they raised their sons, Brett and Ryan. An active individual with a zest for life, Glenn pursued various interests. He was an avid hockey player and dedicated coach for his sons, well known as “Coach Glenn” by many of their friends. He loved cycling, snow skiing, water skiing, sailing, and woodworking. Glenn’s love for architecture and the great outdoors led him to build a family cabin at Christina Lake, BC, with the help from many friends over the years. It would be his legacy. He crafted a beautiful cedar strip canoe which he successfully launched at Christina Lake. He enjoyed hours on the lake with his canoe including many a late-night paddle. With the odd splash…. Ooops.
Glenn’s infectious laughter, or “cackle”, was a testament to his cheerful nature. Whenever his laughter filled the room, you knew he was sharing a humorous anecdote or enjoying a good joke. Known for his unwavering positivity, Glenn possessed a unique ability to see the world through rose-colored glasses, always finding the good in people. He will be missed.
For over two decades, Glenn valiantly battled Parkinson’s disease, refusing to let it define him or hinder his enjoyment of life. In his later years, Lewy Body Dementia gradually diminished his ability to fully embrace life’s experiences. Despite these challenges, Glenn’s spirit and strength shone through.
A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date in September. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Glenn’s memory to Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute or UBC Hospital Clinic for Alzheimer Disease, located at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health.
Glenn will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Carol, his devoted sons, Brett (Jennifer) and Ryan, and his sister, Louise (Vic, Andrew and Christopher). He was predeceased by his brothers, Ross (Louisa) and Doug (Dawn, Kate and Alex).
