Surrounded by his loving family,
Gérard “Pete” Gauvin, devoted husband of Germaine
Gauvin (Richard) for 64 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday March
5, 2023 at The Moncton Hospital. Born in Léger Corner
(Dieppe), NB, he was the son of the late Pierre and Elizabeth
(LeBlanc) Gauvin.
Other than the love of his life
Germaine, he is survived by three children: Lise Arsenault, Claire
Belliveau (Jean “Chico”) and Pierre (Madeleine), all of
Dieppe. Pépére will be greatly missed
by his eight grandchildren: Tessa Belliveau, Natalie Arsenault,
Richard Belliveau, Mathieu Arsenault, Patrick Belliveau, Gabrielle
Gauvin, Patrick Gauvin, Julie Gauvin and his four great-grandchildren:
Hudson, Olivia, Isabel, and Alec.
Besides his parents, he was
predeceased by 10 siblings: Camille, Edna, Rachel, Jeannita, Thomas,
Minnie, Raymond, Ivan, Stella and Armand. Uncle Pete was
well liked by his many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as well as
many nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of
his immediate family.
Pete retired from CNR after 42 years
where he made many friends in Campbellton and Moncton. He
was devoted to his community and well into his 80s was involved in
multiple causes that he loved such as: Councillor for the cities of
Dieppe and Campbellton, a member of CN Pensioners Association, NB
Liberal Association, United Commercial Travelers, Traffic Club of
Moncton, Knights of Columbus, President of Lewisville Minor Hockey,
Club d’Âge d’Or de Dieppe. He
also coached hockey and baseball for many years and was involved in
the organization of many events and sports leagues. He was
always there to help, give someone a drive or visit a friend at the
hospital or nursing home.
He was appointed to the National
Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sports (1971) and was also
very proud to having been named to the New Brunswick, the Moncton, the
Dieppe as well as the Sackville Sports Halls of Fame. Pete
was passionate about his sports and could be often seen at the
Wildcats, Mets games and rarely missed any of his
grandchildren’s activities. He was a devoted
Expos, Red Sox and Canadiens fan and loved bowling, golfing and
playing cards with his many friends. He was always
interested in everything and everyone around him and loved to make
people laugh with his hundreds of jokes and perfect
delivery.
The family wishes to thank the
caregivers at Residence Bellevue and the Moncton Hospital for their
compassion and support.
