Obituary
Geraldine Barnes, long-time Halton Hills resident, and Holy Cross Church parishioner, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2023, in Mississauga.
Geraldine highly valued learning, teaching and sharing music with those around her. She taught at Holy Cross Catholic School for many years.
In her retirement, she co-founded the Grand Teacher volunteer program, which matched senior volunteers to work with students, she was a founding member of Literacy North Halton, and she also put her love of playing the piano to use by volunteering for several years at Georgetown long term care homes. She continued spreading musical joy by playing daily for the residents of Malton Village Long Term Care facility, where she lived from September 2020 to her death.
Predeceased by her husband Colm, she raised her six children Mary (Ken), Michael, Anne, Carmel (Bill), Fergus and Conor anchoring them with strong roots, while also encouraging them to spread their wings. She was the loving grandmother of Shelagh, Ryan, Julie, Michael, Rachel, Elsa, Una, Zoe and great grandmother of Liam, Isaiah, and Maeve.
Geraldine will be deeply missed by her family and friends locally, across Canada, in her place of birth, Ireland, and beyond.
Friends will be received at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown, on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, between 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. for refreshments and fellowship. Prayers and family sharing will begin at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Amnesty International in memory of Geraldine.
A Funeral Mass will be held this summer to honour Geraldine, details to follow.

We offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Geraldine Barnes May 1 2023 and hope that their memory may be a source of comfort during this difficult time. Your thoughts and kind words are greatly appreciated.
Sincere condolences from the Duggans. I remember Carmel’s (my mother, Geraldine’s sister) visits to Georgetown and Geraldine’s visits to Dublin – especially the spirited discussion and debate. A long life, well lived.
