September 17, 1932 – December 9, 2022
It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of a beloved husband to Anne for 63 years, father to Alec and Callum and grandfather to Calianne and Gina.
After a long and courageous battle with Valley Fever, and an outstanding life filled with family, countless friends, his volunteer associations and two careers he loved; Jerry passed peacefully at The Victoria General Hospital. The family would like to thank the staff for their expert care and kindness.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Lexie and Alex Kirker, Jerry and his family, brother Bob and sisters Jean and Marie moved to Victoria. Jerry met Anne in 1955 and quickly knew she was the one. They were married in 1956 and started a family of their own shortly afterwards. After first joining the Canadian Air Force, Jerry found his lifelong career with the Department of National Defence Fire Department, where he retired as a Fire Prevention Officer. Shortly after his retirement, he took a position as a Sergeant-at-Arms at the Parliament Buildings.
As a dedicated member of local organizations such as Victoria-Columbia Lodge No. l- Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, The Gizeh Shriners of BC, Elks of Canada Lodge, Royal Canadian Legion, Jerry volunteered many of his hours to promote and provide service to our community needs. Not too many Sundays where Anne and Jerry couldn’t be found at The Legion’s Meat Draws.
In the late 1970’s Jerry & Anne found their lakefront retreat on Lake Cowichan. Here gatherings for family events and weekend enjoyment became ‘The Lake” where the door was always open and the hospitality overflowed. Everyone knew that Anne and Jerry knew how to throw a party. So many wonderful memories and fun times were shared with all. In 1998, they bought a place in Mesa Arizona and started spending winters there, where Jerry enjoyed playing golf in the desert sunshine. They made many good friends at Venture Out and relished the escape from Canadian winters. Life was good.
Jerry will reunite with his mother, Lexie Kirker and father, Alex Kirker, his brother Bob (Flora) and his brothers-in-law, Bud, John and Jerry. He is survived by sisters Jean and Marie (Ed); and his many nieces and nephews. His bright blue eyes, full head of hair, quick wit and love of life will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the near future.
Notice will be provided through this column.
