It is with profound sadness to announce that Gerald Specken passed away suddenly on March 26, 2023 at the age of 88.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1935, Gerald fondly remembered helping his family on the farm as he grew up, his days in university and ultimately moving to Edmonton where he met the love of his life, Lilian (nee Wasywich). A chemical engineer for decades, he was a humble, unassuming man. As a result, many may not be aware that he had a Master of Science from the University of Waterloo, co-authored and authored a number of significant environmentally focused patents and even owned his own company. In his early years he was on a curling team, played the trumpet and even spent one summer touring Europe with friends. Seemingly a serious man to the outside world, he had a gentle (and mischievous!) sense of humour which often took people by surprise.
He was predeceased by his brothers Ray, Art, John and (most recently) his sister Rosemary. His wife of almost 23 years, Lilian, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in 1984. He leaves behind daughter, Joanne; grand-daughter, Beth Jensen (Jens); great-grandson, Trent; many nephews and nieces; and former sister-in-law, Marianne Wasywich. He will be remembered for his kind, supportive, generous nature.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Resurrection Catholic Church (10555 50a St NW, Edmonton, AB).
Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Gerald’s name to Catholic Social Services.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home.
