Obituary
George Socrates Charal, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Sunday, March 5, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends.
George was born to Emmanuel and Kalliroy Charal, both Greek immigrants from Asia Minor, a region in Turkey once fully occupied by Greeks.
Looking for broader opportunities they moved and settled in Toronto, Ontario. They created the Westhills Restaurant and Pool Hall that would shape and inspire the colorful childhood memories of George’s adventurous and resilient heart. George grew up with his three siblings (Fay, Pat, and Ken) and many stories came from their adventures as kids that we will treasure in our hearts forever. While attending an Ahepa dance at the Greek Community Hall, George met the love of his life, Zaharoula Gikas. They danced, they fell in love, and the rest is history. They expanded their family with two beautiful children, James, and Catherine. Accepting a large promotion, George would head a start-up Aluminum Extrusion Plant, which would bring the entire family to Calgary, Alberta.
While here in Calgary, George built a community of lifelong friends that loved and adored him. His playful nature and his kindness would make people comfortable wherever he went. His quick wit and great sense of humour always lit up a room. George devoted his life to his family, whether it was looking under the hood of a car, working on a renovation, or barbequing a meal….he did it all with absolute love. He adored his grandchildren Kyle, Avalin, Alisha, and Gabriel, and they all adored their Papou. He loved to tell stories of his upbringing and loved to make everyone laugh. He was a Boogie-Woogie aficionado; he had a passion for playing the piano and for poetry. He was the best husband, father, grandfather (Papou), father-in-law, uncle, and friend.
George is survived by his wife Zaharoula Charal of 57 years; his son James (Raquel); daughter Catherine (Shawn); grandchildren, Kyle (Alicia), Avalin, Alisha, and Gabriel; and step-grandchildren, Zach, and Ava.
We love you so much, another 93 years just would not have been enough….we will deeply miss you.
