George Nathaniel Thorne
May 11, 1943 – January 10, 2023
With his loving family present by his side at the Health Sciences Centre on January 10, 2023, George Thorne of Torbay died peacefully at the age of 79. George was predeceased by his parents, Nathaniel and Esther Thorne, Father and Mother-in-Law Walter and Emily Babstock, and sister-in-law Cheryl Babstock and Brother-in-law Ray Babstock.
George was loved by his family and will be dearly missed by his wife of 53 years, Donna, his children Lori Greene (Colin), Blair Thorne (Ally Baird), and Bradley Thorne (Kristen Romme) and the apples of his eye, his grandchildren Marlo and Sadie Greene, and Joseph Thorne, as well as his step-grandchildren Al and Sarah Locke. Also mourning his loss are his sister Carrie Riddle (Bob), brother Henry Thorne (Marion), and in laws Fred Babstock (Pauline), Marg Lane (Gord), Ollie Perry (Ken), Harvey Babstock (Sheila), Jean Parsons (John), May Babstock, Nora Hutcherson, Linda Turner (Ches). George also leaves a wide circle of extended family and friends.
He was a proud member of Local 740, and spent many years working as a plumber pipefitter all over the province before switching gears and joining the St. John’s Airport Authority Fire Hall where he spent 25 years with a great group of friends and colleagues.
George had a great passion for all things Newfoundland, in particular the Regatta, and on the first Wednesday of August every year, you could be certain to find him lakeside. In his later years, he and Donna followed curling and baseball avidly, and were great fans of Team Gushue and the Bluejays.
But it was his family that brought him his greatest joy. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and was always there with wise words of advice and support, and a hug and a kiss.
George will be resting at Caul’s Funeral Home in TORBAY. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 14 from 12 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. Funeral will take place the following day, Sunday, January 15 at 2 pm at St. Nicholas Anglican Church, Torbay, with inurnment to follow.
