After a courageous battle, Gary John Ander passed away on June 21, 2023 at Bethesda Health Centre in Steinbach, MB, five days after his 63rd birthday where family had gathered to celebrate with him in his new apartment he planned and set up for his retirement.
Gary was born in Winnipeg, attending school in Charleswood, playing hockey with V.V.C.C. where his team won many trophies. The family moved to The Pas in 1972 where his outdoor enthusiasm took hold. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking many camping trips with his visiting Uncles and skidooing with his friends. He had a guiding license and did so for many years while living in Lac du Bonnet, Churchill, Thompson and The Pas.
He took many courses including welding at KCC in The Pas where he was awarded the top class prize of welding gloves and huge lure welded together. He continued his training and ended up with Calm Air in Churchill as an Aircraft Mechanic Engineer then moving to Thompson where he retired as their maintenance crew chief.
Gary met his wife Diane “Susie” while employed at a fishing lodge near Lac du Bonnet. From there they moved north and spent many years in Churchill with their favourite friend, Shinook. In 2003 they purchased acreage on Rahl’s Island Road, The Pas facing the Saskatchewan River with Grace Lake on the back of the property where they both enjoyed the “fruits” of the land.
Susie predeceased Gary on December 22, 2021 in Lac du Bonnet. His sister Patricia Ander passed away August 2015. He is survived by his parents Harvey and Doreen, sister Debbie Patenaude (Gordon), daughter Jodie Lynn Melnyck, step children and special friends Sue (Randy) and Andrew.
Gary and Susie will be laid to rest at the cemetery in Lac du Bonnet.
