Hrytsak, Gary (1945 – 2023)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Hrytsak on August 6, 2023, at Mindemoya Hospital, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Born on January 8, 1945, in Garson, Ontario, Gary’s journey through life was marked by his dedication to his family, his community, and his passion for nature, music, and gardening.
Raised in Garson, Gary’s education began at St. John’s elementary school and continued at Nickel District High School. He attended Browns Technical College, where he received his Electrician credentials, setting the stage for a fulfilling career. Gary’s professional journey took him through various roles, including his electrician position at the Falconbridge smelter. His commitment to his fellow workers led him to the role of Compensation Officer and Executive Member with the Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers Local 598. Gary’s advocacy for workplace safety and his dedication to legislative matters were evident through his active participation in numerous committees.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Gary found joy in an array of hobbies. Rock collecting, gardening, fishing, hunting, foraging, and strumming his guitar were among his favorite pastimes. His renowned garlic earned him well-deserved accolades at the Providence Bay Fair for several consecutive years. Gary’s passion for music echoed that of his father, Mel Hrytsak, as he shared his gift with others through the strings of his guitar.
Gary is survived by his loving wife Margaret and leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. His daughters, Sherri-Ann Beckett (husband Andrew), Christine Linden (husband Al), and Karen Hrytsak, will carry forward his memory with pride. He is also survived by his brother Irvin Hrytsak (wife Lillian), his sister Judy Chaperon (husband Craig), and his brother Michael Hrytsak (wife Melanie). Gary’s presence will continue to be felt through the lives of his grandchildren: Scott (wife Danica), Mischa (husband Alan), Alicia, Brennan, Kiri, Jacob, and Joshua. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
While we mourn his passing, we find solace in knowing that Gary is now reunited with his son Jason, his parents Melvin and Lucienne (Lecompte) Hrytsak, and his sister Debbie Anthofer, who have gone before him.
Gary’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and love will forever remain in our hearts. As we celebrate his life, let us remember the joy he brought to all of us and the impact he had on the world around him.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Gary’s memory on September 3rd at the Ukrainian National Federation Hall (130 Frood Road in Sudbury, Ontario). The doors will be open for drop-in visitors from 1- 4 pm, followed by a memorial service from 4-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Native Women’s Association of Canada in support of MMIWG2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit) or the Turtle Pond Wildlife Center.
