In Celebration of
Gabriele Gualtiero Erasmi
January 23, 1942 –
January 7, 2023
It is with great sadness that the Erasmi family announces the loss of its ‘paterfamilias’, Dr. Gabriele Erasmi, who passed away on January 7th, in his 81st year.
As a young man Gabriele exchanged his native Trieste for New Haven, Connecticut, where, on a Fulbright scholarship, he enrolled as an undergraduate at Yale University. From there he ventured further west to Minneapolis to pursue his doctoral studies in Classics at the University of Minnesota. Finally, it was Hamilton that claimed him when in 1971 he accepted a teaching position in the Department of Romance Languages at McMaster University.
Gabriele was a born academic. He was endowed with a sharp intellect and an enquiring mind and throughout his long career at McMaster he fostered in his students both knowledge and love of Italian language, literature, history, and culture. Such was his contribution to the intellectual life of McMaster that on his retirement in 2003 the Faculty of Humanities established in his honour The Gabriele Erasmi Travel Scholarship to Italy.
Gabriele’s contribution to the cultural life of Hamilton was no less noteworthy. As President of the Dante Alighieri Society of Hamilton and as the Vice-President of the Giuliani Dalmati, he worked tirelessly to create opportunities for the Hamilton community to enjoy and appreciate the rich artistic, musical, and literary heritage of his native Italy. His efforts were celebrated in 1997 when he was named the Italo-Canadian Man of the Year by the Sons of Italy organization.
Gabriele Erasmi was a supremely generous man – generous of his knowledge and wisdom, generous of his time, generous of his friendship. First and last, however, ‘la famiglia e tutto’ was his motto, and it was his wife Ida, his sons Alessandro, Manfredi, Manrico, and their wives and children who occupied that special place at the centre of his life.
Ave atque vale, amicissime Gabriele! Sit tibi quies iucundissima.
