Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Freeman William Payne announce his passing at the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders, NL, on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023, at the age of 76 years.
The eldest of his family, Freeman was born on July 6th, 1946, in Daniel’s Harbour, NL, and resided there until the final two years of his life. He worked at the zinc mine until its closure in 1990. He then opened his own business, a meat processing operation, that he ran until retirement. It kept him busy year-round but especially during the moose hunting season when he worked long days and nights to keep up with the demand for his services. He made friends from near and far during those years.
Freeman will be remembered by his family and friends for his witty humor and the silly songs he made up and, equally, his generosity and kindness. He would always share what he had, whether it was food, tools or the ability to transport or pick up a package on weekly trips to Corner Brook.
Children brought great joy to Freeman’s life. He and Bessie were blessed with one son, Mark and one granddaughter, Xiana, whom he loved dearly and would spoil at every opportunity.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Bessie (nee House); his son, Mark (Reggie); his granddaughter, Xiana; brothers, Abe (Sybil) and Dennis (Vicky); special friend, Gerry House; brothers and sisters in law, Heber (Phyllis); Harold (Effie); Lyman (Peggy); Hiram (Jackie); Reg (Valerie); Ben (Pat); Torin (Karen); Vivian Cunard; Millicent Sinnicks; Nancy (Rick) Biggin; Sharon (Melvin) House; Selma (Derek) Patey; Glenys (Dawson) Diamond; Elaine House and a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and extended family and friends. Freeman was predeceased by his parents, Elsie and Walter Payne, parents in law, Clarissa and Chelsey House and brother-in-law, Harris House.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre staff in Port Saunders, where Freeman received kind and compassionate care for the final two years of his life.
Visitation will be held at Holy Cross Anglican Church in Daniel’s Harbour, NL, on Monday, June 26th, 2023, between the hours of 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm. Where also the funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023, at 2:00 pm, also at Holy Cross Church, with Deacon Nora Sheers officiating; burial to follow at the church cemetery in Daniel’s Harbour.
