Frederick Charles Cunningham was born in October 1932 in Pontrilas, SK to Morris and Rose Cunningham. Fred’s early years were spent playing hockey and fastball in the Nipawin area. In 1950, he joined the Air Force and was stationed to Trenton, Ontario where he met Bernice Phillips. They were married in October, 1951. After receiving an honourable discharge in 1952, Fred and his new bride moved to Bowness (Calgary) and started a family. Fred, at the same time, started bricklaying and playing senior hockey and fastball all over central Alberta for the next 25 years. Fred loved travelling and camping and took the family to Yellowstone National Park, Disneyland, 2 trips to Ontario and 12 campgrounds a year. In 1978, Fred and Bernice moved to Pontrilas, SK to enjoy a slower pace. With his son, they started Pineland Masonry. Fred liked the small town feel of Nipawin and started playing old timers’ hockey, fastball, golf and later became an umpire. Still liking to travel, he and Bernice travelled with friends to Arizona for the winters. After losing Bernice to cancer, he moved to Cedar Manor in May of 2017 and resided there until his stroke in April of 2021. Unable to care for himself, in May he moved to Carrot River Health Centre where he entertained the staff and received the very best of care until his passing.
Fred was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years Bernice, his parents Morris and Rose Cunningham and an infant sister Nelda Rose.
Fred is survived by his daughters Penny (Dennis) Visser of Calgary, Darlene (Randy) King of Kelowna and his son Terry (Naideen) of White Fox; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Fred will be missed by all.
