Frank Thomson of Black Diamond, Alberta, was born on March 12, 1955, in Turner Valley, Alberta passed away suddenly on the evening of February 23, 2023, at the age of 67, at his ranch near Black Diamond, Alberta.
Frank will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Leslie and their miniature dachshund, Gracie-Lou.
He also leaves behind his siblings Linda (Lawerence) Graham of Calgary, Alberta; Lorne (Wanda) Thomson of Black Diamond, Alberta; Virginia Miller of Black Diamond, Alberta; Shaun (Lorrie) Thomson of Nokomis, Saskatchewan and Dawn Thomson of Turner Valley, Alberta; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Also missing Frank are Leslies’s extended family and many dear friends that Frank was blessed to have made along his journey through life.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, Henry Chandler Thomson and Lakie Faye Thomson.
Frank was fortunate to have had many incredible adventures. A favourite few that he often reminisced about are: hunting with his brother Lorne and many close friends throughout his life, guiding hunters in British Columbia, competing in the bulldogging events in the FCA and Chinook Rodeo Associations and finally, the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, until a leg injury forced him to quit. During his rodeo career with the CPRA, Frank qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, Alberta, competed in the Calgary Stampede, and earned a spot on the Team Wrangler Rodeo competition in Scottsdale, Arizona. After quitting bulldogging, he fell in love with team roping, which allowed him to train horses and help teach roping to anyone who cared to learn. Team roping also kept him within driving distance from home as he and Leslie started to build their ranching operation. He loved running cattle in the Sheep River Forestry and especially enjoyed chasing the “wild ones.” As he built his own herd of cattle and put up his own feed, he and Leslie also started a small horse breeding program and he was proud to be able to compete on and sell many of his team roping horses. Frank also enjoyed golfing with Leslie and on the men’s golfing league at the Turner Valley Golf course until the demands of a busy ranch life took over too much of his time. Frank and Leslie also shared a passion for reading books, including Tom Clancy, Michael Connelly and John Stafford. They often discussed the adventures contained within the pages of those stories.
Frank enjoyed helping and mentoring people and the many kids who wanted to learn to ride or rope. He especially loved helping the younger Thomson boys and a few other kids learn to bulldog. He was so proud of their achievements in the rodeo world, as his dad and uncles were proud of him when he ventured out into the world of rodeo himself.
One of Frank’s beliefs was the saying that “If you do something you love, you never work a day in your life,” and he always said that he was fortunate to be able to do the things he loved.
In lieu of a formal service, Frank would have wanted everyone to raise a glass of their beverage of choice, wish him well on his new journey and remember him as you knew him in whatever capacity that may have been, whether it was hunting, rodeoing, team roping, riding the range gathering cattle, at a cattle branding, reminiscing about past adventures, sharing a meal or just shooting the breeze over a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop.
May the grass grow lush and tall and the water be sweet and plentiful. May you be reunited with friends and family that have gone on before you. May you once again ride some of the beloved horses that have been waiting for you, and may Pagan, Slick, Sarah and Amy, your treasured working dogs, be by your side once again, eager to work those cows.
Forever loved and truly missed, R.I.P. cowboy/rancher/husband and best friend.
