DOWNEY, Rev. Fr. Michael W.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Father Michael W. Downey, who peacefully returned to the Lord on Saturday, August 12, 2023, in his 73rd year. Father Mike touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with, from parishioners to his family and friends. He dedicated his life to being a devoted servant of God and a cherished Father of the Catholic Church. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Shirley Downey, sister Kathy Shane, and brother in law Gary Frolander. He is survived by his siblings: Richard (Margaret), Jo Ann, Robert (June), Jeff (Anita), Joe (Jan), and by his nieces and nephews: Tom, Karen, Stephen (Julie-Anne), Leanne (Chris), Jill, Mike (Heidi), Dan(Emma), Jaime, Christie, Megan and Emily. He was a loving brother and Father to many, and lived his life with grace, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to his faith. He was an avid euchre and cribbage player and enjoyed watching the Blue Jays play with his dad, and indulging in a few extra sweets when he was allowed. Fr, Mike took great joy in his sports and travels, playing the piano, singing in the choir, and attending musicals with his closest family and friends. Ordained a Priest on April 30, 1977, Fr. Mike took great pride in his work as a Vocations Director for many years and served as Pastor and Associate in the Hamilton Diocese in many parishes in Kitchener, Teeswater, Walkerton, Hamilton, Stoney Creek and Burlington. Father Mike was a talented speaker with his sermons offering insight, comfort and inspiration to his congregation. His kindness, generosity and empathy will be missed. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with Prayer Vigil at 8 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 287 Plains Rd. E. Burlington, ON. The Funeral Mass will be Offered on Thursday, August 17 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 11 am. Interment at Parklawn Cemetery, Cambridge Thursday at 3 p.m. Memorial Donations to Innisfree House, 2375 Homer Watson Blvd., Kitchener, ON N2P 0E9 would be appreciated.
