Obituary For Evelyn Slater
In Loving Memory
Evelyn Gail Slater (Reimer) known to her loved ones as Gail, left us peacefully in hospital in Spirit River, Alberta on Thursday, July 20, 2023 surrounded by her family.
She was born 75 years ago in Carman, Manitoba to loving parents Mary Giesbrecht and Peter Reimer.
Gail lived her life in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Langley, Aldergrove and Abbotsford, British Columbia, with a few years spent in Spirit River, Alberta near her daughters and their families.
Gail was the ultimate people person, living her life in service to others. She had a deep love for her family and kept track of everyone’s accomplishments and milestones. Gail was always there to support others in their times of need, offering heartfelt talks over a pot of coffee and a kitchen table. Her warm and accepting nature made people feel loved and valued, and she had a wry sense of humour that she often shared.
Gail’s favourite times were spent celebrating holidays, birthdays, marriages, and simply visiting with friends and family. She particularly enjoyed travelling, often embarking on adventures with her sister Jean, usually to places near a beach. She also took her daughters on quite a few road trips to visit family when they were young, from Winnipeg to Langley and back again, driving solo most of the time and stopping at all the nifty spots along the way. Gail was also an avid Canucks fan and cheered on the team passionately, never missing a game. In their later years, she and her brother Art were a constant love and support for one another.
Gail will be lovingly remembered by her daughters April (Waylon) Ionson and Jennifer (Ben) Pawlett, as well as her son John (Marie) Harder. She leaves behind her siblings Roseanne Callaghan, Jean Jackson, and Art Reimer, as well as her grandchildren Damon(Charlene)Kaufman, Autumn, Wyatt, Ryker, and Declan Ionson, Emma Pawlett, and James Harder.
Gail was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary Reimer, her sisters Susannah Heavens and Hilda (Hugh) Grant, and her brothers Elwin and Ken Reimer.
Gail pursued higher education at Red River College and the University College of Fraser Valley, specializing in accounting and business. She also served in the Canadian Armed Forces at CFB Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, in 1973.
Throughout her career, Gail was known for her conscientiousness, diligence, and hard work. She formed lasting friendships during her many years in office settings, most notably at Motorways in Vernon, BC, and Winnipeg, MB. Gail also enjoyed her time as an Avon representative, cherishing the connections she made along the way. In Abbotsford, BC, she served families as a resident manager, providing them with safe, affordable, and comfortable environments in which to raise their children. Gail poured countless hours into cleaning and painting units, ensuring they looked as good as new for the next family.
Gail believed in an inner Christ, the belief that we all have the ability to live in loving service to others. She exemplified this throughout her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Surrey, BC, on Saturday, August 26th, 2023, to honour Gail’s memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gail’s honour to the Central Peace Health Complex Auxiliary. Contributions can be sent to Box 339, Spirit River, AB T0H 3G0, attention Alice Dobish.
