Obituary for
Elmer “Archie” Archibald
Elmer George “Archie” Archibald – Brentwood, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2023, in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro with his daughter by his side. Elmer was born in Colchester County to loving parents, the late Roswell and Alfreda (Fisher) Archibald. He was the eldest of three siblings, Ellen, (Keiller Shea) and Ross (Karen).
He found his career passion early in life as a machinist. He worked in bus repair, then at a hat factory in Ontario before coming home to Nova Scotia, where he had a long career with the JP Porter Company in Dartmouth and Logan Drilling Group in Stewiacke. He specialized in marine, dredge and drilling repair for the bulk of his career. He eventually established his own machine shop in 1997 and continued to work almost daily up until the fall of 2022. He loved the detail and problem solving of his job. He would say, “If I can visualize it and draw it out, I can create it.” And create it, he did. He was a true artist and inventor, a master tradesman of many talents and disciplines ranging from carpentry, boat building and wood carving to creating a functioning replica steam engine. In later years he became locally known for his duck and songbird carvings.
Elmer was a member of the Shortt’s Lake Yacht Club, the Brookfield Curling Club, the Brookfield Golf Club and a long-time member of the United Church in Dartmouth and Brookfield. He was an avid gardener who was passionate about the conservation of land and all its creatures. He was a kind, honest and humble man who loved life, God and his family.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 21 years, Annie (Geddes); daughter, Judy Hill (Paul); son, Scott (Robyn Everingham); granddaughter, Kirstie Erb (Andrew); five nieces, two nephews, and their families, along with stepdaughter, Jeannette Low (Scott) and step granddaughter, Sophia.
He was predeceased by his parents, both siblings and first wife of 39 years, Elaine (Lynds).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust.
There will be a private family interment followed by a public Celebration of Life at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences available at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
