HARLOW, Elma Jean (August 23, 1919 – April 27, 2023)
Elma Jean Harlow (nee Tost) was born at the family home on Queen Street in Georgetown on August 23, 1919, to parents Albert Dale Tost and his wife, Barbara Elizabeth Kennedy. She was the last surviving child of their 11 children and great, great-grandchild of the town’s founder, George Kennedy. She married Herb Harlow on September 6, 1941, but said goodbye for the next four years as Herb was shipped overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Corp. They later had a daughter, Mary Robinson (Doug Richardson, deceased 2019), and son, Douglas Harlow (Lynn Corbett). Herb remained the love of Elma’s life until his passing on April 30, 2001. Elma will be remembered for the love and laughter she brought into the lives of her grandchildren, Bret Robinson and Tara Robinson (Ed Robinson), great-grandchildren, Amber, Katelynn, Eli, Charlie, and Georgea, and great, great-grandchild, Phoenix. Elma was also cherished by her nieces and nephews, many of whom predeceased her.
Elma spent 81 years in the choir at Knox Presbyterian Church where she was a cherished fixture. She enjoyed staying active, which she did at the Seniors’ Centre later in life. She was an avid walker, often covering four miles around her neighbourhood. This was an activity she kept up until moving from her home on Sarah Street into Mountainview Residence. Here, she made new friends, gained new experiences, and engaged in many activities, especially anything related to music. She became a dear member of the Mountainview community and was cared for lovingly by staff for seven and a half years. Elma passed away on April 27, 2023, at the age of 103.
Friends will be received at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown (905) 877-3631 on Monday May 1, 2023 from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service in the chapel at 2 p.m. Interment Greenwood Cemetery, Georgetown. Reception to follow in the Trafalgar Room. Memorial donations can be made in her name to the charity of your choice.
