Obituary For Elizabeth “Betty” Galloway (nee Srayko)
Betty Galloway peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Prairie Lake Hospice, at the age of 99 years.
Just 3 weeks short of turning 100 years, Betty always believed in living a good long active life of 10 decades and her family and friends were fortunate and thankful to be a part her remarkable life journey.
She was born on her parent’s prairie farm near North Battleford, SK (Whitkow). Betty had rich cultural and family ties to the Ukrainian communities. Helping with hard farm work, yet enjoying traditional celebrations was a way of life for this family.
Her father encouraged the children to get a good education, and as a younger child of 9 siblings, Betty would long to go to school with her older brothers and sisters, but was much too young. A few times she managed to walk the distance and was thrilled that the teacher allowed her to be included in class. It was a natural career path for Betty to become a teacher – with encouragement from her father. She was especially fond of teaching the young grade 1 students.
Beginning in Saskatchewan in various towns and 1 room schools, then in Alberta in the 60’s with classrooms of 30+ students in a grade, Betty loved teaching and learning. She continued to further her Education Degree most summers by enrolling in University summer classes. She moved from Sylvan Lake, AB, to Fairview, AB, in early 1980’s to be closer to her sons and family and continued teaching there until her retirement.
Upon retiring, Betty kept active with her many favourite hobbies of cooking, sewing, gardening, volunteering, travelling, visiting family, dancing, and socializing at the Golden Age Centre. Here she met and married the love of her life Don Galloway. Together they travelled Canada and the world from walking to the Arctic Circle to visiting China and the Great Wall when it was first accessible. They loved learning about new places and cultures. Betty and Don were active in the community, and they golfed, skied, and danced until Don’s passing in 1999.
Always generous and caring, with a young at heart attitude, Betty shared her homes with nieces, grandchildren going to school or university, family or friends just needing a place to stay and a meal – all were welcome. Her joy came from sharing what she had. She especially loved company in her home in Grande Prairie in which she continued to live. Her grandchildren were a special delight. She will be remembered whenever we hear the music she loved, and in the flavours of her great perogies and other dishes she loved to cook. Her stories, humour, and generous love will be lasting in our hearts.
In April 2022, Betty was diagnosed with a life-threatening cancerous tumour. She survived major surgery at 98. With excellent care, Betty’s wish was to remain at her familiar home, enjoying her hobbies, family, friends, and social outings until she went to hospice on June 2. Many thanks to her caregivers who enabled mom to remain in her home.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Barreth and staff, and the palliative care team at Prairie Lake Hospice for their loving care. Also, a special thanks to Caissa for her excellent care of Mom and Grandma.
She will be sadly missed by her brother Adam Srayko of Leduc, AB, and sister Minnie Dorn of Port Alberni, BC; 3 children: Donald (Sharyn) Nikiforuk and Raymond (Ann) Nikiforuk of Fairview, AB, and Joyce (Murray) Nelson of Parksville, BC; 12 grandchildren: David (Vanessa) of Creston, BC, Jennifer (Dave) Straughan of Caledon, ON, Valerie (John) Muggaberg of smith, AB, Christopher Nikiforuk-Rhyason of Grande Prairie, AB, Lethe Nikiforuk and Samantha (Chris) Picklyk of Drayton Valley, AB, Raymond, Danny, Natalie and Carlos Nikiforuk all of Fairview, AB, Mark Nelson of Montreal, QC, and Julie Nelson of Steinbach, MB; as well as 11 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
Betty was predeceased by her parents John and Paraska Srayko; as well as siblings: Annie Pashkowich, Stephen, Olga Fiford, Natalie Dolynny, Walter, and Pauline MacKay.
Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society – Prairie Lake Hospice (#204, 10134 97 Ave. Grande Prairie, AB T8V 7X6, or www.gpcare.ca).
