Van Zoost, Eileen Mary
It’s with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Eileen Van Zoost, 95. Eileen passed away peacefully on December 30, 2022 at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, NS.
Born on June 1, 1927 in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of Maude Victoria Connell and Harry Alexander Barnett. She was predeceased by her husband, William Van Zoost; her brothers, Ron Barnett and Tremaine Barnett. She is survived by her sons, David (Evelyn) Belcher, Hubbards, NS and Paul Belcher, Calgary, AB, and grandchildren, Laurel, Evan, Jay and Ross and great-grandchild, Bloom.
She grew up in Halifax and graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School. She enjoyed playing piano and singing. She was educated at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, ON where she studied voice and piano. She was a gifted singer with an alto soprano voice. She was Princess Lawrencetown in the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Pageant In 1949. In the 1960s, she performed with the Acadia Drama Workshop at Acadia University in Wolfville which later became The Kipawo Showboat Company. She acted and sang in many musicals such as “My Fair Lady”; “Annie Get Your Gun” and” The King and I”. She taught vocal lessons to many students. She enjoyed being a vocalist and organist in various churches in Middleton, Halifax, Liverpool and Yarmouth.
She lived in Bermuda from 1992 to 1998 where she sang and played the organ at the First Church Of God, North Shore, Bermuda. She was a member of Yarmouth North Baptist Church. She was a member of the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives and frequently played the organ there on Friday nights. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yarmouth North Baptist Church or The Salvation Army.
Cremation has occurred. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Yarmouth North Baptist Church on January 12, 2023. A private interment will follow at Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.sweenysfuenralhome.net
