Obituary
After a full life, Effie Deslauriers (nee Martin) peacefully passed with family by her side on June 18, 2023. Born on the Isle of Lewis in 1919, she led a life full of love and service to others. Predeceased by her loving husband Armand Deslauriers in 1986, she was mother to Ian, Heather and Roger; grandmother to Adam, Jenny, Paul, Chris, Catherine, Renee and Adrian; great grandmother to Alex, Julie, Danica, Kalina, Brienna, Owen, Sadie and Alistair. Effie came to Canada as a war bride, settling in northern Ontario before moving to Toronto to raise her family. She was a nurse by training and practice, specializing in the psychiatric field. Throughout her life she used those skills to help hundreds of people in need of advice, care, counselling and love even into her senior years. Never one to sit idle, she started a day care in her home. She loved children. The result over the many decades was that hundreds of parents and families were exposed to her tender care and love. She was “Aunt Effie” to those kids and families until she started to take care of her own grandchildren. Then she became “Grandma” to all. Finally she was known as GG by all her great grandchildren. She was so well known for her services to children that the local police and schools brought families to her who were in desperate need of support for the care of their children. She never turned them away. A life long volunteer at her church and community care, she also volunteered at a local school when she closed her daycare in her 60’s. Even in her 80‘s, 90’ and over 100 she was never one to stop and sit idle so she began knitting socks, hats and mitts to be distributed to inner city children of Toronto. Over the years Effie loved to travel to many destinations around the world with family and friends. Following cremation a celebration of life service will be held at Bridgenorth United Church on July 15th, 2023 at 11:00 am. In August she will return to the Isle of Lewis, Scotland to be buried with her husband Armand. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Bridgenorth United Church or to your favourite charity
