Obituary
EDWARD CHARLES JASPER (May 27, 1929 to April 26, 2023)
Ed passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at the Melita Health Centre at the age of 93.
Ed is survived by Gloria, his loving wife of 38 years; daughters, Krista Jasper and Tami Bilton; son, Sheldon Jasper; grandchildren, Destiny McInnes, Brandi Fidler, Sasha Barritt, Hope Bilton, Nicole and Jett Jasper; great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Felix and Milo Jasper, Jayda McInnes, Autumn O’Keefe, Braxon and Nixen Boucher, Dylan Murphy, Jemma and Octavia Barritt; sister, Phyllis Elder; brother, Don (Sandra) Jasper; sisters-in law, Shirley Dale and Irene Schweedic; brother-in-law, Gordie (Anita) Allan and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Anne Jasper; brother, Robert Jasper; sister, Margaret Love; grandson, Adam Jasper; seven brothers-in law and four sisters-in-law.
Ed was born in Hartney, the fourth child of five. He spent his early years living and working on the family farm. He chose to leave home to work instead of staying on the farm, as there wasn’t enough land for three sons. He worked for the Manitoba Highways Department in several locations before taking on the forman position in Melita, where he worked until his retirement in 1981. One of Ed’s passions was travelling and he travelled to a long list of destinations on his own until he and Gloria continued the tradition together. Ed and Gloria spent twenty-three years going south for the winter, twenty-two of them at Seven Oaks Resort in Mission, Texas. This allowed him to pursue his second passion, golfing, all year around. Gloria joined him in this sport, which they enjoyed immensely. Ed always came back with more golf balls than he started with. He would drive his ball straight down the fairway but searched the bushes all the way to his ball and ended up collecting over 3000 “other people’s” balls. Even when the sign read “Stay out – rattlesnakes”, he went in anyway and told Gloria that the balls were hanging like grapes. He collected 475 logo balls, which are a reminder of so many of the courses they golfed. These balls are proudly displayed in the home in a beautiful homemade display case.
Ed and Gloria first started dating when he was building and renovating homes, as carpentry was one of his hobbies. He had stakes placed for moving in a house and two of Gloria’s young nephews, holidaying with her, moved them for soccer goals and Ed had to come over to talk to her about it.
The family wishes to thank the staff in the hospitals that gave him excellent care.
A private service for family and invited friends was held at Redpath Funeral Home, Melita on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 2:00pm.
