Edgar Whitney
1932-2023
On March 20, 2023, Edgar Deane Whitney (“The Table
Man”) passed away at the age of 90 – surrounded by his
family. While we are sad to see him leave, there is happiness in
knowing that he has been reunited in heaven with his beloved wife
Annie (Ford), who passed away one year ago.
Edgar was born in Newcastle, New Brunswick, to Harold and
Hazel Whitney. He spent his childhood in Whitney, NB, and surrounding
areas, eventually marrying the ‘girl from up the
road’ and love of his life, Annie. Edgar adored his wife and
still called her “his bride” after 65 years of marriage.
Over the years, Edgar and Annie made homes in Whitney, Dalhousie, and
St. Andrews, and they eventually settled in Riverview NB, which Edgar
always said was “the best place in the world to live.” He
was certainly an expert on the matter, as he walked 2 miles through
Riverview every evening following his retirement in 1991. Once, he
noted that the number of miles he walked during those years was the
same as walking across Canada and back.
Edgar never technically walked across
Canada, but he did drive across the country and back with his family
in 1973. Edgar was a family man, and every summer, he would take his
wife, twin daughters Fay (Alan Jones) and Gay (David Blaikie), and son
Dale camping. Once his grandchildren arrived, he and Annie would even
surprise them by showing up at their camping trips – which
always filled Laura (Colin), Bethany, Timothy (Tiffany), and Katie
(David) with delight.
Edgar worked for NB Tel for 41 years starting with climbing
poles but quickly advanced to the position of supervisor in the
Moncton area. He was mechanically gifted and developed a
reputation for being able to fix anything, and he was always willing
to lend a helping hand. When he inherited his father’s tools
as a young man, he began to enjoy carpentry, eventually making (and
giving away) more than 3,000 tables to friends, family, and people who
had treated him kindly. If you are one of the many fortunate people to
have received a table from Edgar, you can turn it over to see your
table’s number – as he numbered each table he
made.
Together, Edgar and Annie enjoyed countless drives through
the Maritimes and New England states, as well as several years of
weekend outings with the Codiac Squares square dancing club and
Charlie’s Angels round dancing club. He was a founding member of
Bethel Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many
years. He loved photography and was a keen Scrabble player,
especially later in life.
In addition to his parents and wife, Edgar was also
predeceased by his only sister Mae Tozer, infant daughter Cheryl, and
infant grandson James Daniel. He is survived by his children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (Maddy and Jake), as well as
many nieces and nephews.
The family will be receiving friends and family at
Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine
Road, Riverview (869-2007) on Friday, March 24, 2023, from 6:00pm to
8:00pm. A funeral service celebrating Edgar’s life
will take place at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 600 Coverdale Rd. on
Saturday at 11:00am. The interment will take place at a
later date in Alderwood Cemetery. Donations may be made to
Bethel Presbyterian Church or the Heart and Stroke
Foundation.
