Obituary
Ernest Lancelot (Lance) Ewing passed away in Kelowna General Hospital on March 11, 2023, at the age of 96 years. He was born December 19, 1926, in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, the son of Ada Mary (Chafe) Ewing and Ernest Frederick Ewing.
He grew up in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and after finishing school he was hired by the Bowater Pulp and Paper Mill as an electrician’s apprentice. In January 1985, he retired from the mill after 38 years, having achieved the title manager of the substation. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 75 years.
He met and married the love of his life, Tess Rumbolt, in Corner Brook where they lived and raised their three children. They celebrated 73 years of marriage on June 15, 2022.
Lance was known by friends and family to be a good and kind gentleman with a pleasant disposition and a great sense of humour. He was always actively engaged in helping others and his community. He was a very active member of the local drama troupe, the Playmakers. Lance did backstage work on sets, electrical & lighting, etc., in productions that involved Tess in acting roles.
Lance was a proud member of the Knight’s of Columbus and had earned his Fourth Degree. He was the president of the local Columbus Club for 11 years. He was involved when the Club brought the Canadian Opera to Corner Brook as a fund raiser for years. During this time, they also built a new Clubhouse with a bowling alley below.
He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of Canada for years and was involved in helping the Scouts acquire 100 acres in Deer Lake for a new Boy Scouts camp with cabins.
In the early 1980’s Tess and her daughter, Donna, opened the Ewing Gallery in Corner Brook. Lance helped do the framing and after his retirement from the mill took a more active role. During this time, he was an active member of the Rotary Club.
The Gallery became well known and admired and brought quality art to communities which did not have an opportunity to see the work of artists from all around the island. They brought an art exhibit to Labrador and to the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, Ontario with the help of Brian Tobin. They sold the Gallery around 1989, and a few years later Lance and Tess moved to West Kelowna to be closer to their children, Lynn and Copper.
But even in retirement Lance was not one to sit around and do nothing, and always could be counted on to help with jobs for friends and family. For over 20+ years Lance and Tess enjoyed spending winters in Green Valley, Arizona, where they also had many friends and were involved in local activities.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three sisters: Mary Daigle, Florence Schofield, and Catherine (Kit) Woodmore.
Lance is survived by his wife Tess; daughter Lynn and her husband Jon Raby; daughter Donna and her husband Tony Miller; son Lance Jr. (Copper) and his wife Noriko; five grandchildren: Ana Filmer, Neil Strand, Amber Mason, Stephanie Raby, Melanie Raby; and five great grandchildren: Tara Raby, Maggie Mason, Carter Mason, Brooklyn Filmer, Melly Raby. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Hansons Arbor Funeral Chapel in West Kelowna is hosting a private service of remembrance.
Interment will be at Gellatly Heritage Cemetery in West Kelowna at a later date.
A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at The Pointe Clubhouse at a later date in July.
