Passed away peacefully with his daughter, Grace, at his side at the Ottawa General Hospital. Duncan, in his 94th year, predeceased by his wife Anna Wai Chong Chiu (nee Au), is survived by his brothers QIU Deng Ao of Holmdel, NJ and QIU Deng Qing of Ningbo, China, and numerous nieces and nephews in the USA and China. Born in Fuzhou, Fujian, China as the second son to lumber industry giant QIU Yi Sheng 邱益生 and fourth mother NEE Yu Hua 倪玉华, Deng Kwei survived infanthood disease and childhood hepatitis, was nicknamed “little old man” for his precocious wisdom, and followed his father to regular opera performances. He became the family’s scholar, studying chemistry and languages at Beijing University, graduating from Taiwan University and University of Toronto. While working as a chemist in Prince Rupert, BC, he was introduced to Anna by his friends Philip and Bernadette Wong (Vancouver, BC), and he survived a devastating car accident. After a year of rehabilitation in Vancouver Hospital, he married Anna and moved to Ottawa to work for the federal government. He loyally served as a Patent Examiner in the chemical division of Industry Canada for over 30 years. He funded the university education of his younger sister and four brothers who remained in China. He was a simple man who was a passionate opera fan and enjoyed mahjong socials in the Ottawa Chinese community.
Duncan’s funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 10:00 (EST) in the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair, & McGarry, 315 McLeod St., Ottawa. Visitations will be available Monday, March 13, 2023 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A special thanks to the Glebe Centre caregiving staff and the Ottawa Hospital medicine teams for the tireless care given to Duncan over the past nine years.
