Obituary
Dr. Larry Peacocke, 71 of Moncton passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Born in
Halifax NS, he was the son of the late Douglas and Helen (McDonald) Peacocke.
Larry’s post secondary studies started at Royal Military College for one year. He then went on to Dalhousie University to complete a degree in Engineering Physics prior to working on Master’s degree in Material Science and then moving on to Dental School.
Larry graduated from Dental School at Dalhousie University in 1980 and practiced general dentistry in Dartmouth, NS as well as teaching part-time at Dalhousie Dental School. He went on to specialize in endodontics at University of Minnesota, graduating in 1992. Larry, Joan, and the kids stayed for another year while he practiced in Minnesota before returning to Canada and settling in Moncton, NB where he became the first endodontist in the province. While working in Moncton, Larry served on the Executive of the Moncton Dental Society as well as serving as president of the New Brunswick Dental Society during his career. He retired in 2013 with his wife Joan who worked with him at his dental office for many years prior.
Upon first moving to Moncton, Larry and Joan were members of the Riverview Gyros Club for a few years. Larry also enjoyed curling and then found a passion for running in the early 2000s. He ran multiple half and full marathons, including qualifying and running the Boston Marathon 4 times and New York City Marathon once. Larry also enjoyed running the Ottawa Half Marathon with his brother Ken and visiting with family during those trips. In his later years, he still enjoyed walking daily and getting together with his running and walking friends for coffee several times a week.
Larry was also an avid traveller, having been to multiple continents, including Australia, Asia, and Europe. Larry also enjoyed going to Florida with Joan for a couple months every winter since retirement. They enjoyed visiting with old friends from Minnesota on their Florida trips as well as having Susan and Doug coming to vacation with them once in a while. In the last several years, the scuba diving trips with close friends became an important part of his year.
In addition to his other hobbies, Larry loved to read and playing video or computer games. A big fan of the outdoors, Larry enjoyed hiking at the national and provincial parks. He also loved animals, having several dogs over the years, and tolerating his children’s cats. He and Joan regularly provided seeds and nuts to the birds and squirrels that would frequent their yard. Larry took great pride in his property and him and Joan worked hard on their garden every summer.
Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan (Anderson) Peacocke; daughter Susan Peacocke and son Douglas Peacocke; siblings Judy Adelberg (Peter), Jacqueline MacDonald (Ian). Jennifer Dort (Paul), Raymond Peacocke (Joanne), Ken Peacocke (Debbie) and Jeannette Osborne (Kevin). He was also survived by multiple nieces and nephews and extended family.
