Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Edward Dakin. Surrounded by his family, Doug passed away peacefully after a short illness at Stratford General Hospital in Stratford on February 28 2023 at the age of 85.
Doug is survived Ella, his loving wife of 64 years, his sons John Dakin (Kim) and Greg Dakin, and his daughter Dawn Marie Runstedler (John). He will be missed by his grandchildren: Brianne Dakin, Lainie and Addison Spencer, Daniel and Emily Dakin, Ben Runstedler (Kyla) Rachel Carter (Jordan), Michelle Helder (Zack) and Mike Runstedler. Dearly loved by many great-grandsons: Aiden and Owen Doyle, Everett Steever, James, Levi and Nicholas Carter, and Noah Helder. Doug will also be missed by many close friends.
Doug is predeceased by his parents Edward (d.1979) and Ada Dakin (d.1987) and his grandson Graham Dakin (d. 2010).
Doug was St. Catharines born and raised. Always working hard to provide for his family, he worked at ITT Aimco in St. Catharines, Mississauga and Tonawanda New York for 25 years as Plant Manager and later President. He became President of Hendrickson Manufacturing in Stratford Ontario in 1984 and finished his career in 1994 as President of Clemmer Industries in Waterloo, Ontario.
Doug was a true sportsman- an avid hunter, outdoorsman and expert sporting dog trainer. Doug’s athletic prowess and love of sports was a huge part of his life.
Growing up in St. Catharines, Doug played fastball, hardball, football and as an adult found a passion for racquetball. He shared this love of sports with others, coaching softball and hockey at the Grantham Optimist Club in St. Catharines.
While he was a dyed in the wool Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Bills fan, there was nobody he would rather watch play sports than his children and grandchildren. Behind the team bus, Doug would drive, never missing a hockey game. His whistle could be heard over the roar of a crowd, sharing his support when a game got tough. He was proud to be cheering on his family at the rink, rowing course, baseball diamond, or basketball court- sometimes all in the same weekend!
A special thank you to Doug’s team of doctors and nurses at Stratford General Hospital, especially his primary care physician Dr. Kim Moore of Wellesley. Thank you to his palliative care nursing team for their loving care during Doug’s illness. Friends will be received at W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St. Stratford, on Saturday March 4, 2023 at 1 pm with service beginning at 2 pm. A reception for friends and family will follow.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth through the Funeral home website at www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com 519-271-7411.
