Marks, Douglas Arthur – It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Douglas Marks on March 5, 2023 at the age of 96. Doug, a life-long resident of Ship Harbour, was a son of Joye (Fahie) and Arthur Marks. He was predeceased by Eva (Nauffts), his loving wife of 67 years.
Doug is survived by his children, Linda (Peter), Cathy, Myretta (John D), Frank (Karen), daughter-in-law Rhonda; grandchildren, Hollie (Ryan), Jeff (Robyn), Elspeth (Jacob), Chrissie (Eddie), David (Charnell), JD (Maria), Keaton, Mackenzie; great-grandchildren, Myla, Cleo, Maeve, Nolan, Duncan, Max, Everette, Darcie, Theo; sister-in-law, Janetta; brother-in-law, Bob; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Eva, Doug was predeceased by his son, Ronald; son-in-law, Wayne; great-grandson, Isaac; and his siblings, Myretta, Elva and Lloyd.
Doug was a very proud member of his village and church community. For many years he served as warden of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church. He loved to tell stories of his life and the people of Ship Harbour from bygone times, including his first job at the Ship Harbour Peg Factory or working from a young age for his father’s logging operation where among other things he drove truck and in winter used teams of horses to haul logs. One of his more evocative stories was, as a boy, watching the ill-fated Hindenburg pass over Ship Harbour on its way to New York. In his later life he worked for the Halifax School for the Blind, retiring in 1989.
Doug considered his family as one of his greatest achievements and loved gathering and taking trips with loved ones. He took pride in his house and its grounds and spent many pleasurable hours in his garage workshop and tending his flower and vegetable gardens. Doug was an ardent Toronto Maple Leaf fan.
Funeral will be Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, with Rev. Andrew Mortimer officiating. A reception will follow in the Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Church, Ship Harbour.
The family would like to thank Doug’s homecare workers and staff of 3 East Dartmouth General Hospital. Special thanks to Venus Yurcak for her care and friendship and to Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital for their compassion in his final days.
