Douglas “Doug” Dwight Matchett, of Boom Road, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, at the age of 64.
Born in Newcastle, he was the son of the late Charlie and Kathleen “Kay” (Harris) Matchett. He was a former Electronic Technician at UPM prior to his retirement.
Doug was a huge sports fan, especially of the Toronto Blue Jays and Team Bermuda Ball Hockey, he would frequently be seen wearing one of these jerseys.
Doug was a generous person and always gave back to his community. It started with Boy Scouts as he established the first Scouts troop in Sunny Corner and led the troop for many years.
He played a major role in the Sunny Corner Softball League and was a member of the Sunny Corner Rebels as a player and coach. This is where he earned his nickname “Cito”. Doug coached many sports over the years, including baseball where he coached from mosquito up to the midget AAA levels. He coached junior high school volleyball and also high school basketball. In his final year of coaching high school basketball, he led NSER to a regular season championship.
He was also actively involved in the NSE recreation council and spent countless hours at the rink and ball field. He played an active role in Sunny Corner days and the Doug’s Slugs team will forever live on in his memory.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 42 years Suzanne (Estey) Matchett of Boom Road; son Shane Matchett (Nia Thomas) of Bermuda; daughter Kelsey Manderville (Scotty) of Quarryville; brother Wayne Matchett (Late Edith) of Boom Road; grandchildren Ivy and Hudson Manderville; sisters-in-law Shirley Matchett of Miramichi, Carmel Matchett of Sunny Corner, Faye Matchett of Trout Brook, Dawn Astle (Boyd) of Sunny Corner, Deanna Estey (Sterling) of Miramichi, Sherry Estey (Jamie Dickie) of Miramichi, Jane Bell of Miramichi, and Libby Estey (Scott Creamer) of Whitney; brothers-in-law Dannie Estey of Hamilton, ON, and David Estey (Sandra) of Strathadam; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Clark Matchett, Ronnie Matchett, and Freddy Matchett; and his parents-in-law Harry and Patricia Estey.
The family will receive relatives and friends from Northumberland Funeral Home & Crematorium, on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 2 pm, from St James Roman Catholic Church, in Sevogle, with Father Dan Melanson officiating.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to St James Renovation Fund, or Hospice Miramichi Inc.
