Donald (Dib) John McLean
November 26th, 1934 – May 24th, 2023
In his 89th year, Dib passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario. Beloved husband of 65 years to Kathryn, the love of his life, who shared their many years together in Collingwood, Port Colborne, and Burlington. Dib will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Stephen (Jill), Scott (Wendy), Carolyn (Michael Feric), and Michael (Maureen). Dib will be further cherished by his ten grandchildren, David (Sang), Andrew (Caitlyn), Peter (Sherry), Fiona (Anthony), Matthew (Gabriella), Patrick, Nathan, Andrew, Reggie (Mackenzie), and Marnie. He loved watching them grow up and was incredibly proud of all of their achievements. Dib was also blessed with the joy and love of his six great-grandchildren, Isla, Alexander, Noah, Carter, Michael, and Ethan. He basked in their antics much to his own amusement. Dib was pre-deceased by his loving sister Joan and her husband Murray Lockhart, as well as his sister-in-law Patricia (Lewin) and her husband, Francis Maguire. He will be missed by his nephew and nieces.
Dib was a hardworking father who demonstrated a strong work ethic by never turning down a double shift. He spent the majority of his professional life working at the St. Lawrence Seaway, but nothing made him happier than good jokes, enjoying a cold beer on a hot day with his neighbours, or having a meal with friends and family (especially if wine was involved). He was a huge fan of the Montreal Canadiens, especially when they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dib was an avid baseball fan who also enjoyed fishing, especially the family’s annual Father’s Day Fishing charter trip. He never wanted to miss eating the catch of the day. Dib loved to work on projects in his garage and tended to his garden with great care. When he had a baseball hat on his head, you knew he could only be found outside. He often impressed his colleagues and grandchildren with his ability to multiply complex numbers faster than a calculator. Dib was notorious for his sweet tooth, even requesting peanut butter from his grandsons in his final days.
He will be long missed and remembered by his loving family and all who had the pleasure of his company. Dib valued his friendships strongly and enjoyed the company of his friends, especially his Collingwood coffee club (Albert, Tom and Archie) and will be fondly remembered by Taralea. Special thanks to the staff at the Revera Williamsburg and those who provided him care at Joseph Brant Hospital. Funeral services for Dib will take place on Saturday, June 10th, 2023, at 1 pm at Fawcett Funeral Home in Collingwood, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations to Princess Margaret Hospital or Movember would be graciously appreciated.
