On Saturday, October 1, 2022, Donald Cecil Cherry, cherished husband of Pauline Florence Cherry, passed peacefully from this life at the age of 88, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Previously married to the late Lois Stewart, he was the loving father of: Jeff Cherry of Smiths Falls; Greg Cherry of Ottawa; Brad Cherry (Gail) of Carp; and Lisa Cherry-Besharah (Shawn Besharah) of Constance Bay; and the loving step-father of Cindy McGann (Ross Goodman) of Dunrobin; Kevin Fisher (Carm Ciocio) of McDonald’s Corners; Trevor Fisher (Sara) of Barrhaven; and Russell Fisher (Nathalie) of Orleans. Don was the much loved grandfather of Meghan (Adam Case) of Chesterton, Indiana; Hannah (Pancho Heide) of Tillsonburg; Cassie Cherry (Isaac Bergen) of Tillsonburg; Caleb and Olivia Cherry of Smiths Falls; Laura Cherry of Wellington, New Zealand; Michael Cherry (Bronwyn Geddes) of Toronto, and Leanne Cherry, (Erik VanSchie) of Ottawa; Rebekka Cherry-Arsenault (John Glinski) of Kanata, and Christopher Arsenault (Jess McNeely) of Almonte; he was also the much loved “Grandpa” of Sheyna and Derek McGann; Caleigh, Kaeden, and Chloe Fisher; Benjamin Fisher; Sienna and Isla Fisher; Proud Great-Grandpa of Mollie, Evelyn, Annora, and Simon Heide; William and Marina Case; and Mila Rose Glinski. He was predeceased by brothers Gerald, Kenneth, and Arthur Cherry; and his parents, Cecil and Clara Cherry.
A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Hazeldean, 20 Young Road, Kanata on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 1pm. A reception will immediately follow the service in Rutter Hall which is part of the church and the interment will take place at 4pm in the Cemetery of St. John’s Anglican Church, 329 Sandhill Road, Kanata North (off March Road).
Don was a long time member of the Capital City Barbershop Chorus, and also of the Aged In Harmony Barbershop Chorus. His lovely bass voice will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Don’s memory may be made to the Primates’ World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF); The Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Kanata; the Ottawa Mission, or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to their many relatives, friends and neighbours for their love and support; and our sincere thanks also goes to the valued staff of Garden Terrace Nursing Home for their care over these past three years, and also during this difficult time of Covid. Don will be sadly missed by all who loved him – especially by his wife of 34 years, Pauline. May he forever Rest In Peace.
