Obituary For Dennis Elsworth Rude
September 9, 1933 – January 1, 2023
It is with profound sadness that the family of Dennis Rude announce his passing on January 1, 2023.
Dennis was born in Speers, Saskatchewan to Otto and Agnes Rude on Sept 9, 1933. The family moved to LaGlace when Dennis was 13. There, Dennis continued his schooling at LaGlace area schools and then stayed in the dorm in Grande Prairie for part of Grade 10. He left after 2 months thinking that was enough schooling for him. Dennis started driving truck at the age of 13, learning on a right-hand drive grain truck.
In 1955, as one of the last homesteaders, Dennis filed the paperwork for a half section of land from the government. This filing cost him $10. This came with stipulations that you had to clear the land and build a $500 house. This was the beginning of Dennis’ farming experience. On this land, he and his father built a 2-room house that was 16’x24′. He later acquired another quarter section.
Dennis met Brenda, the love of his life, at a baseball game in 1955. Dennis always said it was the hot pink peddle pusher pants that grabbed his attention. Brenda and Dennis were married on Sept 9, 1961. They were married on Dennis’ birthday so that he could never forget their anniversary. After their week-long honeymoon, they moved into a house in Grande Prairie. Lenice was born August 19, 1962 and passed away on February 25, 1963. In March of that year, they moved to the homestead in Fourth Creek. Tracey was born May 18, 1966, and Teryl was adopted into the family on June 22, 1969.
In 1972, Dennis and Brenda invested in a herd of sheep in order to supplement the grain farming, this inadvertently sparked Teryl’s LOVE of animals. In 1975 Dennis and Brenda sold the farm and moved to LaGlace.
Dennis and Lanny formed Denlan Trucking in 1976. They hauled sand, gravel, and asphalt in the summer for Wapiti Gravel and logs in the winter for Weyerhaeuser. Dennis and Brenda continued to work and live in LaGlace until Dennis’ retirement in 1988. They then moved back to Grande Prairie.
Dennis and Brenda loved to go camping and went on many camping trips. Dennis loved nature and the adventures that nature offered, especially quadding with the grandkids. A fond memory for everyone involved was building a cabin south of Grande Prairie on a trapline. Dennis and Chester built the cabin while Brenda and Joan peeled the bark off the logs.
Dennis became Papa on June 25, 1989, and a Great-Grandpa on July 22, 2015. Papa loved to tease. There was a time when Keelin was 2 or 3 and Papa had been teasing her, she stood with her hands on her hips, looked Papa straight in the eye and said, “Papa that’s enough.” Papa loved to tease anyone, and everyone was fair game, even the ladies at the Lakeview Lodge and the nurses at the hospital. Jake was fortunate enough to be the last one that Papa teased. Papa loved good jokes and stories and had lots to tell. It was rare that he would tell the same joke or story more than once, but if he did it was a damn good one.
In 2017 Dennis had major heart surgery and a year later, in 2018, they moved into the Lakeview Lodge where they resided until his passing.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Brenda; his children: Tracey Rude, Teryl (Phil) McNeil; his grandchildren: Mike, Aaron, Dan (Shawna), Jake (Alexis), Keelin, and Carter; his great grandchildren: Floyd and Calder; his best friend and brother in-law: Chester Sandboe; and his sisters in-law: Marilyn (Nelius) Haugland and Karen (Brian) Boyd. He is also the honorary Grandpa to Amanda, Ashley, and Austin Yu.
Dennis was pre-deceased by his infant daughter Lenice; his parents: Otto and Agnes Rude; his sisters: Doris Rude, Eileen (Ken) Langstaff, and Joan Sandboe; his brothers: Irvin (Elsie) Rude, Myron (Doris) Rude, and Floyd (Margie) Rude; his in-laws: Art and Lenice Sands; and his brothers in-law: Jim, Sonny, and Bobby.
