It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our loved one, Dayton Anthony Wilson.
Born in Kamloops on December 3, 1994, Dayton was a tenacious, busy child who grew into a caring young man who sought a deep connection with those around him.
Dayton loved cars, bikes and cats as a young child. His first words were ‘Cuda’ (like the car) and ‘Tiki’ (kitty) and when he was just three years old, he decided that training wheels were for babies. He hopped on a two wheeler and never looked back. As he got older, he became good at sports, playing basketball, football, breaking long held records in track and winning the aggregate award for the top male athlete in the school district in seventh grade.
Dayton also showed a great musical talent, teaching himself how to play guitar, shirking offered professional lessons because they were too boring.
When he was a young teenager, Dayton’s class read the book ‘Go Ask Alice’. Instead of taking this as a cautionary tale about drug use, Dayton saw it as a challenge and decided to try all the drugs. Unfortunately, his experimentation instilled in him the desire for some of the more elicit drugs and left him seeking help to stop using heroin when he was just seventeen years old.
Over the next several years as he struggled and failed to abstain from drug use, he also tried to maintain a sense of who he wanted to be. He worked hard at a few different jobs, played guitar, mixed music, showed love to his friends and family and even tried to rescue homeless cats.
In 2016, when he was 21, after 11 hard earned months of sobriety, Dayton suffered a severe brain injury due to drug poisoning. The brain injury robbed him of his ability to walk and talk and while his family fought to help him regain these skills, they saw that music had a way of reaching him and soothing his soul.
After several months of rehab, Dayton was once again able to function and he publicly spoke out on the dangers of drug use in the hopes that he could spare another person from the struggles that he faced.
Eventually he was able to regain his drivers license, got a job that he loved in housekeeping at the hospital, and purchased a new car.
Sadly, eight years after he became sober, his inability to form new connections after the brain injury led him back to struggling with the drug use. Dayton lost that battle in Kamloops on July 21st, 2023.
Dayton is loved and remembered by many. There will be a Celebration of Life held on August 12th at 2pm At The West Highlands Community Hall, 1885 Links Way Kamloops.
The Family is requesting donations in Dayton’s name to the organization Mom’s Stop The Harm to help in the fight to end overdose.
