1926 – 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Daniel. On August 12, 2023, she peacefully left us, surrounded by loving family.
Gwen was born in 1926, in Viking, Alberta. She married her lifelong friend and love, Ian Thomas William Daniel, on April 3rd, 1945. They shared 61 years of both good and hard times, until his passing on June 11th, 2006. Their combined strength was tested in 2001, when they lost their son Murray, and Gwen’s siblings, Eileen and Ralph.
Gwen is survived by her children; Douglas (Bette, deceased), Wendy (Vern Hebner, deceased), Charlene (Jack Folkinga), Janice (Ian Dowding), Valerie (Norman Kneteman); and grandchildren, Ian Daniel (Tatiana), Craig Daniel, Jeff Hebner (Jackie), Cherilyn Fraser (Brian), Travis Daniel (Erin), Jaclyn Woudenberg (Corey), Megan Folkinga (Mark Murphy), David Folkinga, Stephen Dowding (Kendra), Jordan Dowding (Chris Wood), Christie Kneteman (Michael Rosenberg), Mark Kneteman (Emily), and Cameron Kneteman (Cynthia Jiminez-Hicks). To date, there are twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Gwen’s legacy of love, resilience, acceptance, strength, and work ethic continues to grow.
Gwen was an active member of AL-ANON for 46 years. The last three years, she joined weekly meetings through Zoom, sharing her strength, hope, and experiences.
In 2023, she wanted to celebrate her 97th birthday by throwing a party for her entire family. She very much enjoyed planning and giving her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the opportunity to gather and enjoy each other. She gave the following welcome at her party: “As we gather here today, I want to thank you all for coming to join me in the celebration of my 97th birthday. My greatest treasure in life has been my family. I was blessed with six children who have given me thirteen grandchildren and to-date, twenty-one great-grandchildren. Family are the ones who make you who you are. They’re there to help and support, not just during the good times, but also during the tough ones. I thank you all here for the love and caring you have given me. You have all made my life rewarding and meaningful.”
The family would like to thank the staff at MacTaggart Place for their care and kindness. Also, the family would like to thank the exceptional staff at the University of Alberta Hospital, unit 4G4, and Dr. Amanda Wagner.
A Viewing will occur at 1:30 p.m., on August 16th, 2023, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park, Alberta. Following the Viewing, the Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home.
