Remembering Chris
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Christopher Donald Giles. Chris passed away peacefully on the morning of May 21, 2023.
Chris is survived by his wife, Terry, daughters, Amber and Hayley, granddaughter Meegwun, sister Wenona Giles and brother Kevin Giles, and his beloved dogs, Jilly and Borrago. He is predeceased by his daughter, Heather.
Chris’s love of adventure took him down many exciting roads, and his friends and family often described him as a fun-loving and kind man who made friends wherever he went. Chris was a loving husband, a wonderful dad, and an even better grandpa. Often a man of few words, he met any challenges in his life with grace and quiet courage. He was born in Abadan, Iran, to parents Blanche and Donald Giles on May 31, 1950. After graduating from high school in Rome, Italy, he attended Syracuse University, New York, and then the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, completing a Bachelor’s in Marine Biology. He met the love of his life, Terry, in a conversational French class in Halifax 45 years ago, and together they made all their dreams come true. A dedicated teacher, Chris retired in 2010 from Northumberland Regional High School. He taught courses such as AP Biology and Math. He was known by some students as “The Cell Man” and kept his classroom full of wonders from the natural world. He was an energetic man with many hobbies, but his passion was gardening. Over the years, he grew many spectacular organic vegetable gardens. If he wasn’t gardening, he was either singing and playing guitar with the local jam group, out on the bay kayaking, or speeding by on a Laser. He loved working on his old “Fergie” tractor and around the farm.
His family would like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful nurses and doctors at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow and the Restorative Care Unit in Pictou for their excellent care.
A celebration of life is scheduled for May 25, 4 pm at the River John Legion. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the River John Community and Health Centre by e-transfer to cssriverjohn@gmail.com or mail cheques to John McKim, 29 Captain Jonah’s Road, River John, N.S. B0K 1N0, on Chris’ behalf.
Arrangments are under the direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
