Remembered in Love
Charlotte Barbara Purdy (Whalen)
“Miss Whalen (Chuckie) gave me the confidence to get out there and be a teacher. Physical Education saved the day for me. She changed lives.”
– A quote from one of Charlotte’s students
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Charlotte Barbara Purdy (Whalen) on May 16, 2023 in Tatamagouche.
Charlotte was born on January 25, 1945, the second eldest of six children, to the late Elmon “Nick” and Phyllis Whalen of Oxford Junction. She is survived by her husband, Daniel A Purdy and sons, Nicholas and Michael Purdy. She leaves behind her sisters, Heather Morse (Bruce), Berwick, Lindsay Diplock (Maine, USA); brothers, Michael Whalen, Vancouver, Shaun Whalen (Sandra, deceased ) Oxford; brother in law, Henry and sister in law Gertie Purdy, Charlottetown, PEI, sister-in-law Ruth ( Bill, deceased ) Harris, Halifax. She was predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, Margaret and Carl A. Purdy; older sister and best friend, Camellia Gordon Gorrell, brother in law Fred Gorrell; sister in law, Willa Poole; brother in law, Fred Poole.
She also leaves to mourn her loss several nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews who couldn’t wait to visit the farm. They always knew that Aunt Charlotte was just waiting to beat them in a game of hockey, take them for a “walk and talk” around the track, and then off to the barns to see the beautiful horses, and many other farm animals that found their way to “Silhouette Stables.”
Charlotte was an outstanding athlete and graduated from Oxford Regional High School. She attended the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College, and upon graduation was offered a job teaching physical education at Morrison High in Glace Bay. Only spending three years working in the community of Glace Bay, she immediately considered the island of Cape Breton her second home. Charlotte’s outstanding organizational skills and leadership prepared her for excellence in teaching physical education and coaching a wide range of sports. After a few years of teaching, she made the decision to return to university full time and graduated from St. Francis Xavier with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She continued to compete at university and in community both as a coach and as a player. She taught in several schools in the Dartmouth School System followed by a move to Tatamagouche when she and her husband Danny relocated to care for family.
She made a true commitment to the Village of Tatamagouche dedicating over twenty years to coaching the girls’ basketball team. Little did anyone know that upon graduation from North Colchester High School, Charlotte presented each of her graduating players with their NCHS graduation ring that was paid for solely by Charlotte. She received her Refrigeration Ticket / Plant Operator’s Certification including driving the Zamboni earning her the title of the “First Woman in Nova Scotia” to accomplish that goal.
Charlotte was a strong woman who gave selflessly to her community. She was a dedicated member of the church and looked forward to sharing a story or two when called upon each Sunday morning. She was not afraid to be bold and was the “First” to try out events that would benefit both her students and her community.
A time of visitation will be held Thursday, June 1 from 2-4pm in Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. A Private Graveside Service will follow in Bell Gift Cemetery, New Annan. If so desired, donations in Charlotte’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
“Charlotte, your footsteps can never be filled, nor your love ever forgotten.”
Arrangements are under the direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
