Obituary
The family of Mrs. Celina M. (Furlotte) Butcher, age 101, wife of the late Gus J. Butcher, is sad to announce her death at Loch Lomond Villa, on April 20, 2023. She was born in Nash Creek, NB, to the late Fredina and Annie (LaPointe) Furlotte. Celina and Gus enjoyed 59 years of marriage, until his death in 2001.
Celina and Gus moved to Saint John just after their marriage, where they raised their family of seven children in the North End, in St. Peter’s parish, until moving to Boston in 1963. Celina created a comfortable home, with hand-made quilts and clothing for her children, baked bread every week, many delicious treats like date squares, and holiday fruit cakes and meat pies. Family came first, and there was always a pot of tea and some squares or cookies for visitors.
They returned to Saint John in 1975, where their grown children, and their families were welcomed warmly with home cooked foods and music. Celina took pride in growing many houseplants and having a beautiful flower garden. A high point for Celina was when she received a personal serenade and a kiss on the cheek from Danny O’Donnell at his concert at Harbour Station, after a request from her son, Frank.
She was a long time member of St. Ann’s church and a volunteer for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary. She often made baked desserts for fundraising and events for these organizations, and once offered a quilt she had made for a raffle.
Celina has left her beloved children, Brian (Giselle) of Edmonton, Alberta, Bernard (Martha) of New Hampshire, Carol Taylor of Washington State, Sr. Elaine Butcher and Sheila Kelley (Richard) of Massachusetts, and Albert (Marilyn) of Upham, N.B.; brother Allison Furlotte of Miramichi, sister Evelyn Furlotte of Dalhousie; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus, her son, Frank, her grand-daughter, Rachel, her siblings: Adeline Foley, Norman Furlotte, Edna Maltais, Irvin Furlotte, Maurice Furlotte, Eileen Willard, and Alvin Furlotte.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd. (646-2424) with visiting on Thursday, April 27, 2023, and Friday, April 28, 2023, from 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann’s Catholic Church on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11:00 AM, followed by interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
