With celebration of a life well lived, we the family, announce the passing of Cecil Smith, of South Tetagouche, which occurred Friday, April 7, 2023, at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst, at the age of 80.
Born in Bathurst, he was the son of the late James and Myrtle (Black) Smith.
Cecil served in the Canadian Army for the Canadian Provost Corp (later known as Military Police) with distinction from 5 June 1961 until 31 July 1964 when he was honorably released. While serving he also earned his Paratrooper Wings and completed many jumps while stationed at Calgary, Alberta.
Cecil or C.P. as he was known to many, joined the North Bay Police Service in 1965 working 30 years before retiring as a Staff Sergeant. During his career, he worked in a number of divisions, Criminal Investigation, Drug Enforcement and the Courts to name a few.
He enjoyed his career and was a very proud officer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah (Ferguson) Smith, one son, Brian Smith (Daniella) of Squamish, BC and a daughter, Sondra Smith of Victoria, BC.
Stepson, Victor Matanovic (late Ivonna) of Stouffville, ON.
Stepdaughter, Danielle Dobinson (John) of Oshawa, ON.
A grandson, Ty, step-grandchildren: Kyle, Leah, Olivia and Madalyn.
One brother, Dale Smith (Martina) of Thunder Bay, ON.
One sister, Elizabeth Daley (Robert) of North Tetagouche.
Several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. A. Bouchard, Dr. M.A. Doucet, Dr. R. Arseneau, nurses, staff and the Extra Mural Program for the excellent care given to Cecil.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst, on Thursday, April 13, 2023 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday morning, April 14, 2023 at 11 a.m. from Holy Family Church, Bathurst.
