Obituary
On June 28th, surrounded by the love of family and friends, Cathie passed away peacefully at home. She was predeceased by her mother, Florence Starkell and father, Raymond Starkell. She was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in February 2022, and did her very best to live out her remaining time to the fullest.
Cathie was born May 9th 1955 in Winnipeg. She started her early life in East Elmwood helping out behind the counter of her family’s grocery store at the age of twelve. Her work ethic was rooted in these early experiences. As the eldest of six children and paving the way for her siblings, she took on a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology majoring in Dietetics from the University of Manitoba. Following her graduation, she was accepted into a residency program at the University of Alberta. It wasn’t too long before she realized that this wasn’t the path that she was meant to take. So, packing her bags she headed back to Winnipeg and attained a Certificate in Education. She knew in her heart, that teaching was her true calling.
For most of her teaching career, Cathie taught foods and textiles at Arthur Day School. She had a commanding presence in the classroom. Although she took her subject very seriously, she also knew how to make her classroom fun and entertaining. Cathie exemplified school spirit – her day never ended at the bell. She always found time to help with extracurricular activities including coaching and managing sports teams, yearbook committee, and graduation ceremonies. Cathie’s passion for the school community began much earlier as a student herself. In grade 12, she often led school assemblies and was awarded with the “Ookpik” award as the student that best exemplifies school spirit. The generosity of her time and spirit extended beyond her work-life.
Cathie was a consummate grassroots volunteer all of her life. Whether it be a special event like the Pan Am or Canada Summer Games or with organizations such as West End Cultural Centre, Manitoba Theatre for Young People or various festivals. She was there to help. She was dedicated to the point of taking on every shift of the outdoor winter production of Charlie Brown’s Christmas despite temperatures repeatedly dropping to – 30c. Cathie was a true patron of the arts. From the Winnipeg Folk Festival to the ballet, she participated full-heartedly. Whenever Bruce Cockburn came to town, she was in attendance. Upon a chance meeting, she gushed over him and told him that he was her “Paul McCartney”. He responded with a look of WTF. It wasn’t the only time Cathie turned the head of a celebrity.
Cathie was a “larger-than-life” personality and made her presence known when she entered a room (in a good way), usually leaving the room with a new friend. She had many friends and for good reason. She cared about them and showed it in her actions. Her walking friends included June and Janet. Her Hertz friends Jean, Monica and Rena. Her teaching friends Bev, Cheryl, Erna, Maxine and Tannis. And many more. They all held a special place in her heart.
All of Cathie’s nieces’ and nephews’ lives were enhanced by her ability to see their unique gifts. She loved them dearly and they all loved her back. If invited, she seldom missed an event. Needless to say, she was always busy with birthdays, baby showers, sporting events, weddings, graduations and the like. She took so much joy in sharing in these experiences. Of course, they will never forget the Christmas that they all received pajama pants, made by her, in a fabric choice that matched their personality.
Cathie was the best sister her siblings could ever ask for. Whenever she was needed, she was always there to help. There were several times over the years that she would come to a sister’s or brother’s rescue whether it was helping with a child, pet or to orchestrate a special event. She never failed anyone.
Cathie was a devoted daughter. She took great care of her mom and dad. After her dad died, she became the primary caregiver to her mom. She never considered it a hardship because as far as she was concerned her mom was her best friend. At the end of the night, she would tuck her mom into bed, give her a kiss, and tell her she loved her. A truly special relationship.
With an ache in our hearts, Cathie leaves behind her family to honour her memory: Cindy and Bob Newfield and their children Jillian, Daniel (Megan) and Kirstin (Andrew); Conrad and Kim Starkell and their children Clayton (Kerry), Ryan, Troy (Randi), Eric (Rose), and Luke (Brittany); Chris and Gerry Couture and their child Damon (Jemma); Curtis and Gail Starkell and their children Sloan, Sage and Tate; and Colleen Guglielmo and her children Anthony, Alex, and Ava.
Cathie lived out her final year in Petersfield at the home of her sister Chris and brother-in-law Gerry. She was surrounded by love, joy and the best of care.
The family would like to thank the amazing health care teams in the ER and medical ward 2 at the Selkirk Regional Hospital and Dr. Harlos and his care team at Cancer Care Manitoba.
Cathie was a truly special person. Forever in our heart.
And, as Ru Paul would say “sashay away!”
Cremation has taken place. The family held a private celebration of Cathie’s life on July 14th. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba or Manitoba Theatre for Young People.
