Carol Amy Bennett (nee McDowell), an exceptionally beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, died January 21st, 2023, in Edmonton, Alberta.
Carol is survived by her husband, Jack; their children; Michelle Schurek (Jeffrey), Richard Bennett (Monica), Patricia Rooker (Steven), and Christine Bennett (William Colgan); 12 grandchildren; Aiden, Nathaniel, and Macreena Schurek, Jack, Isabella, and Mia Bennett, Bennett, Nova, and Lincoln Rooker, Winston, Alexander, and Edith Colgan.
Carol was born, along with her identical twin sister Patricia, in Vancouver in October of 1946, to Florence Eileen McDowell (nee Doran) and Allan Ferguson McDowell. They grew up with their two younger brothers, Jim and Allan, in Lethbridge. She graduated Lethbridge Collegiate High School in 1963 and went on to attend the University of Alberta, where she graduated with a Bachelors of Education in 1968.
Carol met Jack in Edmonton in 1965 and they married in 1971. They spent two years overseas living in Switzerland and traveling Europe. They returned to Canada in 1973 to start a family. They moved to Edmonton in 1981, where they have lived since. Carol worked as a teacher, book keeper, and office administrator during her career.
Carol’s true love in life was her family and especially her grandchildren. Her other passions were running and walking, not to mention financial investments and securities. In April 2022, Carol was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As with so many other times in her life, Carol was a consummate source of inspiration and courage as she managed through this period. Her strength carried her family through the last weeks of her life, and she died surrounded by love.
She will be forever remembered as a caring, funny, and thoughtful woman. We are all better people for having known her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol’s memory to Pilgrim’s Hospice.
A Memorial Service for Carol will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church (9915 148 St NW, Edmonton) on Thursday, February 16th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The family asks that you please wear colour to honour Carol. Cremation has taken place.
