Sandy’s Obituary
The world can be searched for a million years and a greater man will never be found.
It is with heavy and broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all, Sandy Mugford of Winterton, aged 77 years.
Sandy was larger than life and lived life large. To find him without a smile would be a task for the greatest amongst us to seek. He loved spending time with family and friends, telling a good yarn, and having a game of cards. To go 60 for 120 without looking at his hand, was a far too common occurrence.
He was one of those people that if you called on him to help fix something, or have something made, he wouldn’t stop until he found a way. He enjoyed the challenge and always wanted to understand how things worked. He never once, throughout his whole life, hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone.
Upon leaving his home in Makinsons at an early age, Sandy spent his early years working with Babb Construction, installing water and sewer throughout the island. A job he excelled at and loved. This job brought him to Winterton where he found his forever and true love, Evelyn. The story goes that she picked him out of the pipe gutter (but that has yet to be confirmed.) Their love was strong and unwavering and grew into a family of four when his greatest joys, Darlene and Heather, were born. He was a silly, fun, protective dad to his girls, and it was easy to see his love for them, and theirs for him.
When he thought it was impossible for his heart to hold more love, along came his granddaughters, Emily and Paige, and most recently, Shelby. In his eyes, the sun rises each morning and sets each evening, just for them. That was Sandy, to know him was to love him…there was just no other way.
In addition to his love and dedication to his family, Sandy had a deep love for his community and felt it a responsibility and a privilege to give back. He became a member of the Recreation Committee (supervising many a teenage dance in his day), as well as a member of other organizations and committees; The Orange Lodge, Anglican Church Vestry, just to name a couple. But, by far, his generous heart was given in service to The Winterton Volunteer Fire Dept. He joined in 1974 and had been a member, in some capacity, ever since. Being a member brought him so much joy and purpose. The brotherhood, the friendship, the comradery was something he so deeply and dearly treasured.
Sandy is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 wonderful years, Evelyn; his two adoring daughters: Darlene (Michael) and Heather (Sheldon); and his three precious granddaughters: Emily, Paige and Shelby. He also leaves to mourn, brothers: David (Sheila) and Dorman (Betty); sisters: Alva and Louise; brother-in-law: Jim (Rennee); sister-in-law: Joyce; and a circle of family and friends so incredibly large that it would be impossible to list.
The family warmly and gratefully welcomes all friends and family who would like to pay respects on Friday, August 9 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Winterton Municipal Complex.
A service celebrating Sandy’s life will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Winterton Municipal Complex.
In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Division (CMHA-NL) at www.cmhanl.ca.
When anyone came to Dad for something, he would often be heard saying, “Now, you leave that with me.” So Dad, you leave this with us. We will love you until our very last breath and you will never be forgotten for the incredible man you were.
